The Nine Spiritual Gifts There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. (NKJ) 1 Cor 12: 4 -10

(1) The Vocal Gifts The Holy Spirit speaking to us or through us. (a) Tongues - It is a language never learned by the speaker, nor understood by the mind of the speaker. Heavenly (angelic) or human language. Is not the same as personal tongues. (b) Interpretation - The supernatural showing forth by the Sprit of the explanation or meaning of tongues. It is not a literal translation. (c) Prophecy - A spontaneous, supernatural vocal expression of inspiration in a known tongue which strengthens, encourages and comforts the body of Christ. Is a direct message from God.

Tongues and Prophecy 1 Cor 14: 2 -5, 39 1. When one speaks in tongues they speak the mysteries of God (v 2) 2. When one gives a prophecy he is helping other believers (v 3) 3. Speaking in tongues builds up, or edifies, the individual believer in the Spirit. The gift of prophecy builds up the church (v 4) 4. Prophecy is greater because it directly edifies the church (unless the Tongue is interpreted) (v 5) 5. Do not forbid anyone to speak in tongues. However, it’s better to desire prophecy in Church meetings (v 39)

Gift of Tongues in Church (Acts 2: 4 -6) 1. Have Anointing 2. Be recognized by leadership. 3. Speak clearly. 4. Have interpretation (1 Cor 14: 19, 28) 5. Only Three! (1 Cor 14: 27) 6. Not to be forbidden (1 Cor 14: 39) 7. Will never be condemning or contradict Word of God. Will be in the form of Man to God.

The Gift of Prophecy All can prophecy but not all are prophets. 1. The purpose of this gift is to strengthen, encourage and comfort (1 Cor 14: 3) 2. Only ‘part’ of the mind of God for the ‘now’ (1 Cor 13: 9) 3. Greatest of vocal gifts (1 Cor 14: 1, 5, 39) 4. Sign to unbelievers (1 Cor 14: 24, 25) 5. Not irrevocable (Jer 18: 7, 8) 6. For a particular group of people (or person) at a particular time (should ‘witness’ and ‘confirm’) 7. Is for today! (Joel 2: 28; 2 Pet 1: 19; Acts 2: 16 -18)

Seven Test for Prophecy, Tongues, Interpretation (1 Cor 14: 29 -32) 1. Agrees with Scripture ? (Gal 1: 8) 2. Fruits in Person’s life (Matt 7: 15 -20) 3. Glorifies Christ (Jn 16: 13 -14; Rev 19: 10) 4. Is Fulfilled (Deut 18: 20 -22) 5. Leads towards God (Deut 13: 1 -3) 6. Brings Liberty (1 Cor 14: 3; Rom 8: 15) 7. Inner Witness (1 Jn 2: 20, 27; Eph 1: 17 -19)

Instructions for using these gifts… 1. Person in control (1 Cor 14: 32) 2. Natural Voice. 3. Contemporary language. 4. Not with extreme emotions. 5. Refrain from nervous repetitions. Instructions for receiving these gifts… 1. Test with seven tests as given. 2. If real, don’t leave on shelf but pray through until fulfillment – ask Lord about it!

(2) Revelation Gifts God revealing something to us. (a) Distinguishing between Spirits - Is a supernatural insight into the realm of the spirit world. It reveals the type of spirit(s) behind a person, situation, action or message (not being critical or judging- Matt 7: 1) (b) Word of Knowledge – Supernatural revelation by the Holy Spirit of certain facts, present or past, about a person or situation, not learned by natural mind. (c) Word of Wisdom – Supernatural revelation by the Holy Spirit giving the believer God’s wisdom to proceed on a course of action. Reveals God’s plan and purpose and how to proceed in God’s will.

Distinguishing Between Spirits Goes hand in hand with the other two Distinguish between… 1. Spirit of God 2. Human Spirit 3. Demonic Spirit Purpose of gift…. 1. Deliver bound saints. 2. Discern Satan’s plans. 3. Keep saints from sinning. 4. Detect false revelation. Exposes Deception: 1 John 4: 1 -6, 2 Cor 11: 13 -15, 1 Tim 4: 1 -2. Both Human and Satanic deception. Examples: Jesus– Matt 16: 16, 17 & 22, 23 ; Mark 9: 25. Elisha’s Servant – 2 Kings 6: 16, 17; Isa 6: 1 Paul – Acts 16: 16 -18; Acts 8: 13, 17 -24 You – Luke 10: 19 -20

Words of Knowledge and Wisdom Word of Knowledge Purpose: To aid and assist in perfecting the purposes of God in the midst of His people. It also warns of danger, discloses sin, encourages and reveals hidden items. Always glorifies God. Word of Wisdom OT: 1 Kgs 14: 2 -6; 2 Kgs 6: 9 -12 Purpose: For protection and instruction. Reveals how to apply knowledge revealed. May reveal how to pray for situation. Will show to deliver words of knowledge and deal with spirits discerned. JESUS: John 4: 16 -18; 9: 3 ; 13: 26 JESUS: Jn 4: 16 -19; Jn 11: 4, 17 Matt 17: 27; Luke 22: 10 -12 NT: Acts 10: 1 -6; 17 -19 Acts 14: 8 -10 Comes as inner voice, vision, dream or through vocal gift. OT: Daniel 2: 19; 1 Kgs 3: 16 -27 NT: Acts 21: 10, 11 Today: Luke 21: 12 -15

(3) The Power Gifts The manifestation of God’s power working through us. (a) The Gift of Faith – Supernatural faith for a specific time and purpose. It is given when needed for an immediate task or one in the near future. Words of wisdom spark the gift of faith. (b) Working of Miracles – Supernatural intervention in the ordinary course of nature. It is the demonstration of the power of God where laws of nature altered, suspended or controlled. (c) Gifts of Healings – Supernatural impartations of God’s healing power into people who need healing. It is plural as there are many ways to minister healing to the sick.

Gift of Faith 1. Received by operation of revelation gifts. 2. Often manifested as another power gift (Mark 4: 37 -41) 3. Brings glory to God, causes others to believe & fear. 4. Resurrection Faith (Luke 7: 12 -15). 5. Judgement speaking faith – Matt 21: 19; Acts 5: 9 -11; 13: 8 -12 6. Provides protection & victory – Daniel 3: 16 -18; 20 -26 Working of Miracles 1. Operates: Begins with knowledge and needs wisdom which releases the gift of faith which causes us to boldly do what word of wisdom revealed. 2. Purposes: Deliver from danger, protect, provision, judging, confirming a call, confirming preached word.

In Jesus’ life: eg. Water to wine, Feeding 5000 - John 20: 30, 31 In OT: Moses – Ex 7: 4 -5 ; Elijah – 2 Kings 2: 8(2 Kings 2: 13 -15) In ACTS: Acts 2: 19 -12, 43 ; 8: 5, 6 etc… TODAY: John 14: 12 – “Greater Things”! Gifts of Healings 1. Operates: Word of Knowledge Comes as a feeling, word, thought, vision or by location of person then faith is released with the wisdom to know how to bring healing. Distinguishing between Spirits will show what Spirit is behind the sickness. 2. Should always glorify God and lead to powerful testimony. 3. Examples: Matt 9: 32 -33; Acts 3: 6
