The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust A UK GLAUCOMA SERVICE IN 5 DAYS Dr Michael Grinton (Specialist Trainee Ophthalmology), Ms Carole Whyte (Specialist Optometrist), Miss Zoë Johnson (Consultant Ophthalmologist) 85% were return patients (15% were new patients) The Newcastle Eye Centre saw approximately 10, 000 glaucoma patients in 2016 We studied all of the glaucoma patients seen in the department in a 1 week period (n = 328) 74% of patients were seen at the requested time interval (26% of patents were seen later than the requested time interval) The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation trust cares for 1. 7 million people Diagnosis Treatment In total 10% of patients have had surgery for glaucoma (the most common operation being trabeculectomy) The chart shows the documented diagnosis in the 328 patients Other: - PAC (7%) - PACG suspect (7%) - PACS (3%) - PACG (3%) - PXFG (2%) 77% seen in a Consultant-led clinic (remainder seen by Optometrists and Nurses) Laser & Surgical 1% Normal 9% Other 24% Medical & Surgical 5% POAG 35% 70 years old Medical & Laser 10% Surgical 3% Attending the glaucoma clinic for 7 years OHT 12% Medical 52% No treatment 26% NTG 9% POAG Suspect 7% NTG suspect 4% Co-Morbidities Laser 3% Prevalence of vein occlusion was 4% 97 out of 328 patients (30%) had another ocular co-morbidity CRVO; 7 Outcome of clinic BRVO; 6 Hemi VO; 1 No change to Treatment 63% Dry AMD; 15 Other; 45 Wet AMD; 5 Amblyopia; 15 “Other” included: - Added to surgery waiting list - Added to laser waiting list - Referred to other Ophthalmologist Change to treatment (medical) 24% Discharged 6% RD; 6 DR; 4 FED; 4 Other 7% HSK; 4 A closer look at advanced glaucoma: § 70 out of 328 patients (21%) had advanced glaucoma in at least 1 eye. § The average duration of attendance for patients with advanced glaucoma is 11 years. § 50% of patients with advanced glaucoma had been offered surgery and 40% had already had surgery for their glaucoma.
