The New SAMM Group Mo Bo Motor Boat
The New SAMM Group Mo. Bo Motor Boat Group
The Boat we have bought • It is 7. 0 metres with beam of 2. 5 metres • Main engine is Nissan LD 20 Diesel 60 HP • Auxiliary engine is Murcury 8 HP 2 -stoke hardly used. • Includes flares, life jackets, fire extinguishers, marine radio, Garmin Satnav, Furuno colour depth sounder and fish finder, with 6” screen, and auto pilot. • It has just been cleaned antifouled.
1991 Arbtaban 7. 0 metre
Basic set-up suggestions • The boat remains in the ownership of SAMM • A group has been formed to run it which will give those members the right to use it • They will pay a joining fee to become a member and a maintenance fee each year • The group will maintain the boat • SAMM will pay some costs each year for the use of the boat and have the right to use it for racing and member support
What will it cost to be a member • To join costs € 300 then an annual maintenance fee of € 150 • It would only be fair for all users to pay separately for fuel as time on the water with engine running will differ. We understand it is economical • Members would have to be members of SAMM as well, but non-members can join and would have to become SAMM members
Finances • As the boat is to be owned by SAMM the group finances will be helped by the SAMM treasurer • This will obviate the need for a group treasurer • Profits will go to SAMM • But the contribution paid by SAMM will pay for the use of the boat as well e. g. Race Days • If the group spend less on maintenance than paid that would remain group funds for the following year • Profit or loss if the boat is sold would be allocated to SAMM
Individual finances • The € 300 fee paid to become a group member will only be refundable after 2 years and at 50% of the amount paid. A probation period of 4 weeks would allow full refund of the joining fee • Refund of maintenance fee would be pro-rata on a quarterly basis • Each member would be responsible for diesel
What Group Members need • Members have to be qualified and assessed/trained before using the boat • A calendar would be available for their use and for SAMM • Any other SAMM member could use the boat by joining Mo. Bo for the day for € 65, which will cover maintenance, insurance and other costs plus a payment for fuel used. They would also have to be qualified and assessed. They could take 5 other people with them.
Why should SAMM own the boat? • Several people have not joined because SAMM owns the boat not the group. • This could be changed but why? • To change would need new Spanish documents for ownership and insurance • Use of the boat for SAMM events may have to change
Other issues • There are rumours that the Artaban is unsteady and rolls a lot. This is not so. It is very steady and safe. • It is no good as a rescue boat. It will do almost all required as a support boat and techniques will be developed to improve the weaknesses, but we do not have a rescue boat and not trained to do this
Why Join the Group • Example: • A Mo. Bo member for 5 years would pay € 300 to join plus € 150 a year = € 900 over 5 years • Assuming they sail only 10 times a year = € 18 a sail • Qualified non-members will be able to sail for € 60 a day which again at 10 sails a year would be € 3000 for 5 years • Non-members would not have access to the calendar • All users would have to pay for fuel, so not included above.
And SAMM itself? • SAMM would have priority over all other members for use of the boat: a) Racedays b) Emergency of any sort c) Other SAMM functions • The SAMM fee would be covered by the payment of the mooring fees and insurance. • SAMM would keep the income from Race Days. • It is possible that SAMM would soon have enough money to consider a replacement RIB as well. • Should the boat be sold SAMM would keep any profit.
Why have a group? • The SAMM RIB has shown that only one person has really taken any responsibility for the boat. • SAMM needs a group to run and maintain the boat
What if the ideas do not work? • Extensive searches on the internet have shown that we are buying a boat at a very good price. • There are many models of Artaban and ours is one of the better ones with many accessories. • With a little TLC and extra attention we could sell it, possibly at a profit.
