INTRODUCTION • Hello and welcome to my project on The Netherlands is a country in the continent of Europe. It is situated in northwestern Europe and is home to a well known city named Amsterdam. It is not land locked and the countries next door are Belgium and Germany. I hope you enjoy my project and that you learn something new from it.

FUN FACTS ���� v Population: The population of the Netherlands is estimated 17. 18 million people. v Currency: The currency used in the Netherlands is euro. v Language: The official language spoken there is Dutch. v Religion: The main religions in The Netherlands are Christian, Muslim and Protestant. v Capital: the Netherlands capital city is Amsterdam and some of the main cities are Rotterdam, the Hague and Utreacht. v. The Netherlands has 33, 921. 1 square kilometres of land, much of it reclaimed from the sea. v Bordering Countries: Germany and Belgium. v It is one of the happiest and wealthiest countries in the world.

ANNE FRANK �� • Anne Frank was a German born – Dutch – Jewish diarist. She was one of the most disscussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Born in Frankfurt, Germany she lived most of her life in or near Amsterdam, Netherlands. Having moved there with her family at the age of four and a half when the nazis gained control over Germany. Born a German national, she lost her citizen ship in 1941. By May 1940 the Franks were trapped in Amsterdam by the Germans that lived in The Netherlands. The Franks went into hiding in some concealed rooms behind a bookcase in the building where Anne's father, Otto Frank worked.

THE FRANK FAMILY • Anne Frank's mother was Edith Frank. Her father Otto Frank was a deputy in the German army during WW 1( World War One ) later becoming a buisnessman in Germany and the Netherlands. Anne had a sister named Margot, she was three years older than Anne. Otto was the only member of his family to survive the concentration camps. The Franks were a typical upper- middle- class , German – Jewish family living in a quiet, religious neighbourhood near the outskirts of Frankfurt. When hitler became the head of the Government in Germany on January 20 th, 1933, the Frank family moved to Amsterdam in the Fall of 1933. Otto later said, " Though this did hurt me deeply , ' I realized that Germany was not the world, and I left my country forever ".

• CHEESE FOOD • One of the famous foods in the Netherlands is cheese. The Dutch have been making cheese since 800 B. C. The Netherlands is the largest cheese exporter in the world. With an average of 21 kilograms per year person, the Dutch love their own cheese. The Dutch eat cheese for breakfast, on sandwiches for lunch or as a snack ( cut in cubes ) with mustard and a glass of wine or a bottle of beer at the end of the day. • Drop ( licorice) • The Dutch love licorice or as they call it " Drop ". With more than 2 kilograms per year person the Dutch consuption of licorice is the highest in the world. You will come across it everywhere ; the supermarket, the pharmacy, at the market and gas stations. ' Drop' comes in different flavours and sizes, but basically there are two major differences : salty licorice and sweet licorice.

FOOD • Stroopwafel • Popular throughout the world, the ' stroopwafel ' is by far the most famous and popular pastry from the Netherlands. A ' stroopwafel ' is a unique kind of cookie. It is a waffle made from baked batter and sliced horizontally. The two thin layers of the waffle are filled with special with sweet and sticky syrup (the stroop) in between. The stiff batter for the waffles is made from butter, flour, yeast, milk, brown sugar and eggs. • The 'stroopwafel' originates from ' Gouda 'a place in the south of Amsterdam. It was first made during the late 18 th or early 19 th century by a baker , using leftovers from the bakery, such as breadcrumbs and sweetened it with syrup. You can buy stroopwafels in every supermarket in the Netherlands.

SCHOOL • In the Netherlands school is compulsory ( you have to do it ) for children from the age of five to sixteen. However, most children begin their education at the age of four. Dutch primary school has eight grades known as Groepen. These start from Greop 1 ( age four ) to Greop 8 ( age twelve ). The structure of Dutch secondary schools can be confusing because of streams ( sections) and graduation ages in high school. • School Types • Day care Age 0 -4 The three secondary schools are for three different things : one is for preparing students • Pre- school 2 -4 For vocational training( training kids for • Primary school 4 -12 Specific employment for jobs) , another to • Secondary school 12 -16 Prepare students for university , and another • Secondary school 12 -17 Section to prepare students to study at • Secondary school 12 -18 Universities of applied science. ( technology or inventions)

AMSTERDAM�� • Amsterdam is the capital and the largest city in the Netherlands. Amsterdam is famous for its canals and dikes (a wall to hold back water). Unlike most countries the government is not in Amsterdam it is in the Hauge. The population of Amsterdam is 1, 149, 000 people. Amsterdam is located in the west of the Netherlands. It is one of the popular destinations in Europe, receiving more than 4. 5 million tourists annually. Some things that Amsterdam is famous for are: The Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House, tulip fields, canal cruises, bike rides, windmills, Dam square and many more!

This includes 200 paintings, 500+ drawings and 750 letters, as well as pieces by artists and influences like Monet and many more. With more than 2. 1 million visitors a year, the Van Gogh Museum is the most popular museum in the Netherlands. In 2019, the Van Gogh Museun launched the meet Vincent Van Gogh Experience , a technology driven exhibition on Van Gogh's life and works, which has toured globally.

SPORT • Football is the most popular sport in the Netherlands, with field hockey and volleyball as the second and third most popular team sports. Ice-skating, tennis, gymnastics and golf are the most widely played individual sports. • FACTS • In the Netherlands the Field Hockey team won the Champions Trophy in – 1981, 1982, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2006. • Dutch football teams won three Olympic bronze medals in 1908, 1912 and 1920. • The Dutch reached the World Cup finals three times but never won. The first time they lost the World Cup in 1974 to west Germany, the second time in 1978 to Argentina and the third time in 2010 to Spain.

CLOGS�� • Clogs are traditional Dutch wooden shoes that are a big part of

CLOGS�� • Clogs are traditional Dutch wooden shoes that are a big part of Dutch heritage(special possession) and are still worn in rural (countryside)parts of the country today. Clogs are still popular with people working in agriculture as they are great for walking on muddy ground and can easily be removed. Dutch clogs are made from different types of wood with willow being one of the most popular and they are often painted.

CLOG HISTORY • The first clogs were estimated to be found at least 850 years ago and the oldest wooden shoe known was found in Amsterdam. The clog dates from around the year 1230 and is made of Alder wood. The shoes were made in a variety of shapes and sizes depending on who would wear them. Some had rounded edges while others had pointed toes to help fishermen pull their nets in. • About six million souvenir clogs are produced in the Netherlands each year, so you're sure to find just the right pair to take home!!! ����
