Action Potential (nerve impulse)

Action Potential AT REST: • Inside neuron Negative • Outside neuron Positive

Sodium Potassium pump

Action Potential • Stimulus disturbs plasma membrane • Na+ channels open, starting an action potential

Membrane is Depolarized • Local region inside cell now has net positive charge and outside cell a net negative charge (This is opposite of when at rest!) •

Repolarization • Changes occur behind moving action potential to restore the resting membrane potential •

Sodium-Potassium pump fully restores the resting membrane potential • Uses ATP to restore the proper concentrations of Sodium and Potassium ions inside and outside the cell
