The Role of Social Media There is no denying that social media plays a huge part in every body’s lives. It seems like everybody has an account these days from little kids to grandparents. But do we really understand how it is effecting our health? You will soon find out that social media is not all fun and memes and that social media can cause serious problems!

Social Media and Sleep In many studies, social media has been linked to sleep disorders such as insomnia. Many people sleep with there phone by their side, which can cause create a desire not to miss out on what is happening on social media, leading to less sleep. Here are some facts from a few different studies about the effects on social media. • Out of 473 young adult in Philadelphia nearly all of them kept there phones near there bed. • Out of a sample 1788 young adults, fifty-seven percent reported moderate to high levels of sleep disturbances due to social media. • Studies also showed the more time a person spent on social platforms the more likely their sleep is
How Sleep Deprivation Effects Academics Multiple studies have shown that… • Lack of sleep negatively effects academic performance due to fatigue, inability to concentrate, and tendency to doze off in class. • Students with lower-grades are more likely to sleep less, go to bed later and have more irregular sleeping habits. • People who sleep less are significantly more depressed, irritable and stressed, and as a result are more likely do develop a negative selfimage.

The Role Our Peers Play on our Social Media usage • People are more likely to like a picture if it has been liked by a lot of people, even if it portrays risky behavior. • People are more likely to post pictures, videos, status updates that are out of character if they believe it will get them more likes. • There is a potential for people to engage in risky behavior if it is popularized on social media.
How Your Brain Responds to Pictures on Social Media The following picture, through MRI, shows how the brain responds to images on social media. As you can see, pictures with more likes tend to show greater brain activity than those without.
The Deadly Effects of Cyber Bullying FACTS: • Over thirty percent of children report that they have been cyber-bullied at some point in there lives. • Twelve percent of children report that they have bullied someone on the internet themselves • Studies show that cyberbullying effects both the victim and the offender and both are more likely to be depressed and develop low self-esteem. • It has been found that children who are victims of bullying are more likely to commit suicide or self-harm
