It also demonstrates a Three year German study that shows that the more people express about themselves the more privacy they ask for. FACT COLLECTOR Social Media and its Effect on Privacy In her article Arsella Gales states that with all the freedom social media has given us we don’t realize that our private lives are now very public. She gives two examples of this, the first one is how a teacher in Massachusetts lost her job because she called her students “germ bags” and called their parents snobby on a post on her Facebook page. The second one was Ronald Martin suspension from CNN because of his offensive tweets about David Beckham’s underwear add. She also explains that a study showed that Microsoft’s 70 % of company recruiters rejected applicants based on information found online. At first social media was made to communicate with old friends but it has now surpassed that. People do and post so much of their personal life and gives the web easy access to their privacy. Social Network sites are uniquely positioned to make money by matching people to products. Since they have access to users interests, social, and work background, and other information about their personal preferences, the social networking sites target advertisements specifically to them. Furthermore, many users believe their personal data is safe on social network, but the one thing that most people leave public is their friend list. Researchers were about to infer many personal traits from friends lists, like education level, hometown, or university attended.

Interviews with a handful of teens and adults suggest that some teens seek out corners of social media where they can communicate with their friends and peers away from the watchful eye, or embarrassing comments, of their parents.
