THE NATURE VERSUS NURTURE DEBATE SARA FISHER MYLIYUH ALLEN TAYLOR EVANS AMBER DYER
v NATURE • What is nature? • In this case, Nature is an individual’s biological genes that influence and/or make up their behavior, physical characteristics, and personality traits.
v NATURE CONTINUED… • For example, Jim Lewis and Jim Springer were identical twins that were separated at 4 weeks. They reunited at the age of 39 in 1979. Both ironically suffered from tension headaches, were prone to nail biting, smoked Salem cigarettes, and drove the same type of vehicle. The twins also vacationed the same beach in Florida. • This shows how nature may have influenced their habits, personality traits, and interests.
v NURTURE • What does Nurture mean? • The concept of an individual’s human development that is influenced by his or her environment and/or by the people that surrounds that individual.
v NURTURE EXAMPLE • Bobo Doll Experiment • • • Bandura created the experiment to study social behaviors(aggression). Gathered 72 children from ages 3 to 6 Step 1: 3 groups of 24: Aggressive, non-aggressive, and control models Step 2: Aggression Arousal: fun toys taken away Step 3: Separately placed in rooms with aggressive and non-aggressive toys Results: Those who had aggressive models showed the same behavior
v ADVANTAGES OF THE DEBATE • It shows how both sides can shape an individual’s behavior and personality, especially during childhood development. • It also portrays how important it is to provide a child with a good environment to properly mold their character and behavior. • It displays what type of behavior’s are learned through nurture or that’s genetically attached to an individual.
v DISADVANTAGES OF THE DEBATE • Several people are more focused on “choosing the right side” rather than viewing how nature and nurture works together in human development. • Since this had been an ongoing debate, there are several theories that’s confusing and contradicting. This makes it more complicated to see the effects of nature and nurture.
v OVERALL • You can’t have one with out the other • People can receive personality attributes through genes and be effected by outside influences.
