‘STEM’ at National STEM Centre • Education for a strong STEM economy is built on strong subject teaching. • Specialist teaching benefits young people’s progress. • One challenge of specialist teaching is to help young people recognise how STEM study can lead to rich and varied career pathways. • Thinking of STEM in schools as a group of inter-related subjects can help to build these bridges for young people.
2006 2008 National STEM centre launched supported by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation 2010 National STEM centre website launched 2012 National STEM centre funded until 2018 2013 National STEM centre e Library contains 6700 STEM resources and aims to increase reach through resource packages, community groups and Teacher Associates.
How did we start? STEM cohesion ‘There is a need for greater co-ordination and joining-up of the many providers of professional development and enhancement activities to achieve more coherent delivery, but without sacrificing diversity of choice. ’ The ‘British Library’ of STEM ‘Much of the learned society, national academy and professional institution contributions are relevant, directly or indirectly, to professional development and enhancement activities. It is recommended that as much of this material as possible should be available in one place, subject to quality assurance and copyright restrictions. ’
• Support the teaching and learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in schools. • Help teachers to help young people to recognise how STEM study can lead to rich and varied career pathways.
