Types of Muscle Involuntary Muscle- A muscle that is not under conscious control (Ex. Breathing, digesting food…) Voluntary Muscle- A muscle that is under voluntary control (Ex. Smiling, turning a page in a book…)

Skeletal Muscle- Muscle that is attached to the bones of your skeleton and provide the force that moves your bones. Tendon- The strong connective tissue that connects muscle to bone. Skeletal muscles are VOLUNTARY muscles and appear in bands. Muscles tire easily.

Smooth Muscle. Involuntary muscle found inside many internal organs of the body. Smooth muscle does NOT appear in in bands, but is SMOOTH. Does NOT tire easily.

Cardiac Muscle- Muscle tissue found only in the heart. Involuntary muscle Appear in bands. Muscles do NOT tire easily.

Muscles Work in Pairs Because muscle cells can only CONTRACT, and not extend, skeletal muscles must work in pairs. While one muscle contracts, the other muscle in the pair relaxes to its original length.

Muscular Strength and Flexibility Exercise makes individual muscle cells grow in size. As a result, the whole muscle gets thicker. Thicker = STRONGER Stretching = Flexibility Muscles can be injured if they are overworked or overstretched. Muscle Cramp- The entire muscle contracts and STAYS contracted.
