The Murder of Carelton Comet By: Shauna, Hannah, and Nancy
Different types of Murders First-degree murder is defined as an unlawful killing that is both willful and premeditated, meaning planning or "lying in wait" for the victim. Second-degree murder is defined as intentional killing that is not premeditated or planned and the offender's lack of concern for human life. Third-degree murder (manslaughter) is defined as intentional killing that involves no prior intent to kill.
Fiber Analysis When we looked at the hair found at the crime scene, we could see that it was a human’s strand of hair. This was a small piece of evidence, and it didn’t help narrow down the suspects, until we analyzed the fingerprinting gel.
DNA Fingerprinting Gel The DNA fingerprints that were analyzed were found to be the same as the hairs or blood of Sam Sophomore, Nancy Normal or Carelton Comet. We first started by making a stiff gel. Once stiff, we made small indents in the gel, and used the DNA found in the human hair sample. Next, the gel containing the DNA went through a process where electronic waves were shot through gel separating different macromolecules. Crime Scene 1 of red, yellow, and blue matched Carelton Comet and Sam Sophmore’s DNA. Crime Scene 2 of red and yellow matched with Nancy Normals’ DNA,
Chromatography To obtain the data of the pens, we used a process called chromatography. We first started by drawing dots on the edges of the chromatography paper given. We then put it in some isopropyl, and waited to see what the outcome would be. We found that different inks had different properties, so when the chromatography paper was placed in the solvent, the solvent began to move up the paper. As the solvent rose, it dissolved the ink on the paper and separated the ink into its components.
Some facts on Chromatography: -Investigators, forensic and CSI scientists, use chromatography as a method that scientists use to solve a crime. -Different inks have different properties. -It separates its component molecules of colored mixtures such as inks, pigments, and dyes. -The molecules migrate or move up the paper
Chromatography Analysis Three suspects that were at the crime scene had black pens. Pen #1: has the pigments yellow, red, green, blue and purple. Pen #2: belongs to Nancy Normal, and has the pigments purple and green. Pen #3: has the pigments green and red Crime Scene Pen: has the pigments purple and green, thus matching with Nancy Normal’s pen.
Karyotype Matching Karyotype: An organized profile of a person’s chromosomes. Can be used to diagnose genetic disorders. The Pedigree Analysis showed the different karyotypes of the suspects. 2 karyotypes were discovered at Crime Scene 1 and Crime Scene 2. We had to match the karyotypes of the Crime Scenes to each of the suspects’ karyotypes. Crime Scene 1: matches Sam Sophmore and Carelton Comet’s. Crime Scene 2: matches the karyotype of Nancy Normal’s When looking at SS and NN’s karyotypes, we found that they had abnormal chromosomes.
XYY Syndrome & Trisomy X Sam Sophmore: XYY Syndrome/Klinefelter’s Disease- A genetic condition which affects men, and happens when they have an extra Y chromosome. Symptoms include lack of intelligence, learning disabilities, and behavioral problems. This can include explosive temper, hyperactivity, impulsivity, defiant actions, or in some cases, antisocial behavior. Nancy Normal: Triple X Syndrome- A syndrome which affects women, and happens when there are three X chromosomes. Symptoms include increased risk of learning disabilities, delayed development of speech, language skills, and motor skills, weak muscle tone, and behavioral and emotional difficulties.
Blood Typing To find the blood types of all the suspects, we needed to mix 10 drops of blood from each of the suspects, and 2 drops of selected antiserum. Red blood cells have carbohydrate markers on their surfaces. The liquid portion of each person’s blood contains antibodies against the markers not present on their own blood. Therefore, people with blood type A have antibodies against marker B; blood type B have antibodies against marker A, and blood type O individuals have antibodies against A and B. When antibodies recognize the antigens they are directed against, they will bind to that marker. In the case of blood, this causes clumping of the red blood cells. So we did this to all the suspects’ blood, and when clumping was present, we knew that person had the certain blood type.

Pedigree Analysis Carelton Comet was recently released from prison, and he has changed his name. He also said that he has many different children by many different woman. Sam Sophmore was born between Steve and Susan Sophmore. Steve Sophmore was found to have Huntington’s Disease, and he slowly started to deteriorate. During that time, Thomas Sandstone/CC, had an affair with Susan (Sam’s mother). Fred Flimmer was born between Thomas Sandstone/CC and June. Fred Flimmer also had one sister named Peebles. She was killed by her father due to a bizarre love triangle.
Carelton Comet=Thomas Sandstone? ! Looking at the family histories of all of the suspects, we could see that Thomas Sandstone appears multiple times. He’s had affairs and children with multiple women. He also killed Joan and Peebles because of a bizzare love triangle. When looking at Carelton Comet’s history, we could see that he was recently released from prison, and he has changed his name. He also said that he has many different children by many different woman. So, we are stating that Carelton Comet is Thomas Sandstone was sent to prison after the murder of his daughter, and he changed his name, to hide his identity.
So who killed Carelton Comet? ! So, our theory is that Nancy Normal and Sam Sophmore had planned the murder all along. Nancy dropped the glass as a distraction while Sam Sophmore stabbed Carelton Comet. The two have a disturbing past with Thomas Sandstone, otherwise known as Carelton Comet. Sam Sophmore was so angry by what his mother and Carelton Comet had done to his father, so he planned to take revenge by murdering him. Nancy Normal on the other hand, was found to be in love with Fred Flimmer’s past also included Carelton Comet. Thomas Sandstone (CC) was his father, and he had killed Fred’s sister because of a love triangle. Seeing Fred struggle, and even change his last name, made Nancy furious. She couldn’t see Fred like this, so she decided to team up with Sam, and take revenge. So, we have made the decision that Nancy Normal and Sam Sophmore should be taken for first degree murder.
