The Moon Earth’s natural satellite
Moon Facts • The moon orbits the Earth & both orbit the sun together. • The moon rotates and revolves counterclockwise. • Half of the moon is lit by the sun at all times.
The moon goes through the moon phases cycle every 29. 59 days
Moon phase notes New moon : The moon phases start here.
Waxing- means the lit side of the moon grows larger and is always on the right

Waning – means that the lit side of the moon is growing smaller and is always on the left.

Tides • Caused by the gravitational pull of the moon.
Spring tide • Happens during the new moon and full moon phases. • This causes very large tides at the equator and very small tides at the poles
Neap tides • This happens during the 1 st and 3 rd quarter moon phase. • High tides are not very large (lower than normal) • Low tides are not very small (higher than normal)
Eclipses
Lunar Eclipse • This happens when the earth passes between the sun and the moon. – The Earth puts a shadow over the moon, blocking out the vision of the moon. • This does not happen every full moon
Solar Eclipse • This happens when the moon is directly between the earth and sun. – The moon puts a small shadow some place on the Earth blocking out the vision of the sun. – This doesn’t happen for every new moon phase
