BEFORE READING • “The Monkey’s Paw” was published in 1902 and takes place in London around the turn of the century. • One of the main characters in the story is a sergeant who has returned from a tour of duty in India became a colony of England in the mid-1800 s and did not gain independence until 1947. During this time, it was common for British soldiers to serve in India.

BEFORE READING • While serving in India, the sergeant acquired a mysterious object that a fakir placed a spell upon. • A fakir is wandering Hindu holy person who performs feats of magic and sells charms.
