THE MONGOL EMPIRE

- Formed in 1206 when Genghis united the warring tribes of Mongolia - Laid siege to china in 1209 conquering Xixia and the Jin Empire - they also attacked India, Iraq, and Russia - The empire was divided by Genghis's sons in 1227 - Was a multicultural empire - Empire at it’s height stretched to the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean Sea

THE ARMY

- Army was organized into units of Arbans(10), Zuun(100), Mingghan(1000), Tumen(10000) - Average army had three Tumen - Used recurve bows and curved swords - Using six horses per solders they were quite mobile - After firing volleys pike men on horses would charge at the enemy - Lived off of the land at all times

- During sieges they did whatever they could to weaken cities Often used captives as living shields called Kharosh Leaders got to high ground to help them relay signals with flags Recruited engineers and solders from conquered cities

Genghis Khan

- Not much is known about Khan’s early life - father was poisoned when he was 9 - After that his family lived in poverty - Married at 16 to a girl named Borte - Brought in a new army system based on loyalty - Adopted any orphans from his sieges
