The Mole Its not so bad What is
The Mole!!!! It’s not so bad!
What is a mole? • A mole is a unit of measure for matter. • It’s similar to a dozen… for example – 1 dozen = 12 items – so…. 5 dozen = ____ items – and… 36 items = ____ dozen. – If you can do this - you can do mole calculations!!
Moles & Particles • Particles can be: atoms, molecules, ions, . . • 1 mole = 6. 02 x 1023 particles – This is called Avagadro’s Number!!! • Conversion factors:
Moles & Mass • Mass is the grams of a substance • 1 mole = MM (molar mass!) grams – you find the MM using your periodic table!! • Conversion factors
Moles & Volume • Volume is the liters (L) of a gas present at STP – STP is 273 K & 1 atm • 1 mole = 22. 4 L (at STP) • Conversion Factors:
Solving Mole Problems • 1. Use a single step grid. • 2. Identify your known & unknown. • 3. Place your known in the first box and your unknown after the = sign. • 4. Choose the correct conversion factor to solve! • 5. Multiply the top and divide the bottom!
Examples • How many molecules are present in 3 moles of NH 3?
Example • A sample of 2. 5 x 1048 atoms of gold is collected. How many moles is this?
Example • How many grams would be contained in a 0. 25 mole sample of sugar (C 12 H 22 O 11, MM = 342 g/mol)?
Example • How many moles are found in a 100 g sample of H 2 SO 4 (MM = _______) ?
Example • A 2. 2 L balloon is filled with He. How many moles of He are inside of it?
Example • What would the volume (L) of a blimp filled with 95 moles of hydrogen be?
Homework • CQ # 5 & 6 • WS # 3 • Show the grid - EVERY TIME!!!!
