Parents Themis was one of the original 12 titans, sons and daughters of Uranus (the Sky) and Gaea (the Earth). She was the titan goddess of divine law, custom, assemblies, and oracles. She was one of the first brides of Zeus.
Parents Zeus was the youngest child of Cronus and Rhea. He was the god of the sky, weather, wings, and fate. Most notably, he was the King of the Gods. Together, Zeus and Themis had six daughters: three Horae (Seasons) and three Moirae (Fates).
Honor It is said that Zeus gave the Moirae the greatest honor. Zeus gave the Moirae the power of good versus evil of mortal men. The Moirae gave men their destiny.
The Fates The Moirae were three sisters said to be the incarnations of destiny and life. Their names were Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos. The Fates were often described as stern, severe, ugly, old women.
Etymology Moirae is from the ancient Greek word “moira” which means portion or part of a whole. It is also related to meros which means part or lot and moros which means fate or doom. The English word merit is also related. moros moira MOIRAE meros merit
Upon the Birth of a Child… Three days after a child was born, the Moirae would visit the house in order to determine his or her destiny or fate. The Moirae were said to control the destiny of both mortals and gods.
The Thread of Life Clotho was “the Spinner. ” She spun the thread of life. Lachesis was “the Apportioner of Lots. ” She measured the thread of life, determining how long the person was to live. Atropos was “she who cannot be turned” or “the inevitable. ” She cut the thread of life, choosing how the person was to die.
The Gigantomachy was the war between the Giants and the Olympians. During this was the Moirae killed two Giants, Agrios and Thoon, with their bronze clubs, according to Apollodorus.
Mount Olympus The Moirae sat the closest to their father’s throne on Mount Olympus. Zeus was given the title, “Moiregetes” or “Leader of the Fates. ”
