Who are the Modern Humans? The modern humans are the Homo Sapiens; the last and most thriving species of hominids. The modern humans came after the Ice Age; when the ice melted, wooly mammoths and rhinoceroses went extinct, and the forests started growing. Much smarter than the early humans before. Able to perceive the world differently and be creative. Homo Sapiens found ways to make different tools like axes, swords, bows, and knives. Mostly stone tools until Bronze Age. The Modern Humans = able to use their creativity to help them get through famines and droughts. Also able to express their feelings and thoughts as paintings on walls; culture had begun.
What Did They Look Like? Body Features They looked very similar the humans today. Have similar height and body features like ours. Arms were a little longer than half their own height like ours. Legs were only about half their height. Muscular legs and torso because they still needed to hunt. The hands looked exactly like ours; good for grabbing things Arms also muscled for new jobs like building and farm work. Farmers had flat teeth because of stone bits from pestles/mortars.
What Did They Look Like? Villages and Civilizations Unlike humanoids before, Homo Sapiens were more organized. Lived in bigger "colonies", creating small villages. Most villages had huts/houses of straw. Ø Made to be used for a longer time. Farms for animals and plants began to emerge. As villages grew, more structures appeared. Huts/houses were placed across the land. Ø Organized nicely, not all over the place. Irrigation channels made for easier farming and watering.
When, Where, and How Did They Live? Modern Humans first appeared near the end of Ice Age, 10 000 years ago. Ø Wooly mammoths and rhinoceruses went extinct. The species were welcomed by warm climates. Ø First trees emerged along with other forest animals. They started settleling down longer; end of Paleolithic Era, start of Neolithic Era. Many Homo Sapiens lived in fertile areas, such as the fertile crescent. Lived in villages and towns. Made houses out of straw.
When, Where, and How Did They Live? (cont. ) Later lived in larger communities or cities. Lived in houses made out of mud brick. Decorated houses with things like woven mats. They were civilized. In larger towns, leaders were chosen. Farming, building, sewing, and gathering jobs assigned to different people. Religion began, people started worshiping gods. Made there own culture, festivals, and art.
How did the modern humans get their food? The Fertile Crescent was were most modern humans grew crops. Ø The Fertile Crescent in Middle East, stretched from Mediterranean Sea, Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The Fertile Crescent had good soil so crops grew fast and healthy. Ø Allowed modern humans to gather/plant wild wheat. Made brown flour using stone mortar and pestle. Mixed it with water. Cooked in mud ovens, creating hard, thin bread. Protected herds from predators so the herds could thrive and give birth. Took young animals to their camps/villages to tame them and make obedient herds. Ø Animals in turn gave birth, giving supply of food. They ran into problems like weather, insects, plant and animal diseases.
