The Middle Colonies New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware
Basic information New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware were called the Middle colonies The Middle colonies were between New England the Southern colonies They were ethnically and religiously diverse because of the influence of their English, Dutch, French and German origins
More basic information More agriculture than the New England colonies – also known as the “bread” colonies because of their large grain exports Again: soil quality was everything – New England=good – Middle=better – Southern=best
New York In 1621, the Dutch West India Company began trading in America – Based in city of New Amsterdam (which had a great seaport for shipping) English take over the colony in 1664, renaming it New York
New York This was a proprietary colony, which was a colony in which there was an owner who controlled all the land the government Differs from the New England colonies, where voters elected their representatives to government BUT the people were unhappy and wanted a representative government, so in 1691 the English government finally allowed New York to elect a legislature
New Jersey Ethnically and religiously diverse First: owned by a proprietor, but had a representative assembly and religious freedom Then: officially became a colony (not a proprietary colony) in 1702, but colonists were still allowed to make the laws
Pennsylvania Established in 1682 by William Penn Religious group: the Quakers Pacifists: people who refuse to use force or to fight in wars Penn saw Pennsylvania as a “holy experiment” put ideals of toleration and equality into practice By 1683, more than 3, 000 English, Welsh, Irish, Dutch and German settlers had arrived
Why was William Penn so cool? Designed the town himself Wrote Pennsylvania’s first constitution Believed that the land belonged to the Native Americans and that settlers should pay for it negotiated several treaties with the local Native Americans Charter of Liberties: 1701, Penn granted colonists the right to elect representatives to the legislative assembly Delaware was part of Pennsylvania, but soon became a separate colony that was still supervised by Pennsylvania’s governor
