The Metric System Notes-Foldable
Basic Units Volume: Liter n Mass: Gram n Length: Meter n Units can be varied by adding prefixes to the basic units. Ex) Kilometer
Other Metric Units Temperature: Celsius n Force: Newton n Weight: Newton n
Foldable v Do an uneven hot dog fold-(with a flap) v Label flap: Metric System v Cut 7 tabs on folded flap v Label sections with prefixes (put basic units in center) v Under flaps, write down the value v Cut out conversion steps-glue on back of foldable.
Each Prefix has a value: n n Kilo (k)- 1000 Hecto (h)- 100 Deca (da)-10 Basic Units: Meter (m) Liter (l) Gram (g) q n n Deci (d) - 1/10 Centi (c)- 1/100 Milli (m)- 1/1000
On Back of Foldable Step 1: Determine if the converted number will be bigger or smaller than the original number.
On Back of Foldable Step 2: Determine the location of the decimal point in the original number. Make the decimal point large enough to see easily.
On Back of Foldable Step 3: Count the number of decimal places you will move using the units on front. .
On Back of Foldable Step 4: Determine the direction to move the decimal point (use front). Which way did you move, left or right? Move the decimal point in the same direction. .
On Back of Foldable Step 5: Move the decimal point, adding zeros when necessary. *Don’t forget to remove “old” decimal place. Check to see that your answer makes sense-see step 1. .
