What is a menagerie? A menagerie was a name given to a private collection of unusual or exotic living animals. They were often displayed for visitors to come and see. The difference between a menagerie and a zoo is that a menagerie exhibited the animals whereas a zoo aims to study them and usually has programmes to breed the animals and restore endangered species to the wild.

When were the first animals put in the Tower of London? In 1235 King Henry III was given a gift of three lions. They represented the animals on his coat of arms. He put these lions into a specially built enclosure which was then the start of the royal menagerie.

What animals were in the menagerie? Over the next several hundred years different kings and queens were given a huge range of animals including an elephant, a polar bear, eagles, pumas, tiger, jackal and leopards. Very few of the animals survived long in the Tower as the keepers had no idea how to care for them or feed them properly. Lions were a common gift and it seems they did better than most animals, managing to have cubs.

Interesting Facts In 1826 the Duke of Wellington was constable of the Tower of London. He moved the 150 animals to a brand new zoo in Regent Park. The polar bear that lived in the Tower in 1252 was allowed to swim in the River Thames to catch fish. It was kept on a long chain to make sure it came back! Lion Tower was demolished in 1800.
