What is MLA Format MLA style or format is a system for documenting sources in scholarly writing. For over half a century, it has been widely adopted for classroom instruction and used worldwide by scholars, journal publishers, and academic and commercial presses. MLA Format: Used in English, foreign language, literature courses, humanities. APA Format: Used in social sciences, education, engineering and business.

Remember to use transitions Bridge your point to the evidence. Do not simply have your evidence repeat the line before it. Build up to it. Elaborate, tell me more – who cares? So what do you as the write infer or conclude? What conclusions should I have come to as the reader about your point. Conclude by wrapping up your idea to make space for your next point.

No. Final typed copy (summative) Rough draft and final copy are due Monday, October 2 nd. If due date is missed, student will complete the alternative assignment or requirements. You will have today and tomorrow to work in class on this essay. On Friday, we will be in the Media Center to type these up. Please plan accordingly. Whatever is not done in class must be completed for homeowork.

Guidelines and Requirements for Essay Responses Each response should be in the form of an essay consisting of at least 600 words. Essay responses should be typed, double spaced, in 12 -point Times New Roman font, and in MLA format. A works cited page is not needed for this assignment. Rough draft (formative) Note: Essays will not be graded without a rough draft (formative). Final copy will be a summative grade. Use specific evidence from the texts to support all aspects of your interpretation, including plenty of quotations and paraphrases, but do not lose your own “voice” by bringing in too many quotations. Avoid long quotations. Present enough evidence to prove that your interpretation is well supported by the text(s), and make sure to explain how the evidence you present logically supports your interpretation. Explain the meaning, significance, and relevance of every quotation that you use in your essay. Grades for the essay responses will be based on thesis, organization, support and development of ideas, insight into the subject, clarity, style, and conventions of Standard English (punctuation, grammar, spelling, etc. ).
