The HMAS Sydney was a merchant ship sent to guide a cargo ship across to the Netherlands. The Sydney was coming back to Australia when the HSK Kormoran, a German Raider attacked the Sydney.

The Kormoran knew the Sydney could defeat it because it had bigger turrets and

The HMAS Sydney Memorial in Geraldton is a popular tourist attraction. The memorial has a wonderful view of the town of Geraldton and of the ocean from the top of mount Scott. Everything in the memorial represents something. Like the dome with the sea gulls which represent a sailors lost soul and a flock of sea gulls flew inland to the first ceremony.
