Objectives of the workshop 1) Enable participants to practice techniques to raise their impact and influence 2) Deepen understanding around working effectively with others 3) Increase strategies for handling conflict effectively 4) Develop practical strategies for handling issues in their workplace more effectively

Suggested ground rules – still okay? 1. Be ‘present’ – phones/laptops/tablets etc 2. We are here until 5 pm – please commit to be with each other until then 3. Respect the requests for timeliness through the day 4. Discretion 5. Participation – fully and respectfully 6. Be aware of the difference in the group 7. What else? ?
4 Elements of the Assessment: 1. Completion of all online work & activities on the Virtual Campus 2. Mandatory attendance at all 3 face - to - face workshops 3. A minimum of two meaningful contributions in the discussion forum for each unit – a minimum of 24 contributions in total 4. Submission of a 2, 000 word reflective assignment at the end of the program

Red / Blue activity - debrief In your groups discus : • What was your group’s tactics? • What would you do differently next time? • How did you feel when somebody did not keep their word? • How important is trust? • What did you learn from this activity that has relevance to our real worlds? • How did the circumstances impact on the way you played the activity? • What are the key skills / conditions needed to handle conflict effectively?
Thomas Kilmann defines conflict as…. “any situation where the interests of two or more people appear incompatible” What do you think / feel about this statement?

Push / Pull Horseshoe exercise… • Draw out the horseshoe for yourself • Think about the different styles you use at different times @ work • Push / pull styles… what are the advantages and disadvantages of using these? • Are you getting what you want & need from people…. . is it helping you deliver what you need @ work? • What is your default generally? . . .
Influencing Exercise: Colleague Talk as openly as you can about a situation that is real – and important – to you What have you tried? What’s been successful? What’s not? What’s the outcome you’re trying to achieve? What help are you looking for? Peer Keep the focus on your colleague Listen harder than you have done all day How can you genuinely help your colleague? What can you ask? Can you see any connections between your colleague’s position and the input from the programme? Observer What are you noticing the peer doing? What different techniques from the push/pull model is the peer using? What seems to be working? What advice could you give the peer so they can be even more effective?
Debrief the trios exercise 1. How effective was your influencing strategy in your example? What worked well what didn’t work so well? 2. What could you have done more of less of? 3. How helpful was the feedback? 4. What advice would you give a colleague who is trying to influence another person? Or group of people? 5. How easy was it to listen as the observer? 6. What help / support do you need when influencing?
