The Mali Empire’s Rise • Mali is located on the Niger River. • Sundiata won Mali’s independence. He then conquered Ghana in the 1230’s. • Sundiata also took over the salt and gold trades. • He also introduced cotton into West Africa. • Mansa- title of local and religious
Mali Empire’s Mansa Musa • Mali’s most famous ruler. • He helped spread Islam during the 1300’s. • He ruled for 25 years: Richest man ever! • In 1324 he did his pilgrimage to Mecca. • Mosques were built throughout Mali.

Mali Falls • Maghan, Mansa Musa’s son took over after Mansa died and he was an awful ruler. • The raiders from southeast destroyed Timbuktu. • The Tuareg seized Timbuktu in 1431.
