External Male Organs • Scrotum Ø Loose sac of skin that surrounds the testes Ø Regulates temperature of testes • Testicles (Male sex glands) Ø Produce sperm • Epididymis Ø Tubes located on back of each of the testes Ø Stores sperm • Penis Ø Tubelike organ that functions for reproduction, sexual pleasure, and elimination of body waste
Internal Male Organs • Vas deferens Ø Tube that carries sperm • Seminal Vesicle Ø Gland that secretes sugary solution that mixes with sperm to aid in mobility • Prostate Gland Ø Gland that secretes an alkaline solution to sperm to decrease the acidity of the vagina • Cowper’s Glands Ø 2 pea-sized glands that open into urethra Ø Secrete a lubricating fluid • Urethra Ø Tube that carries urine or semen
3 Glands that Make Semen • Seminal Vesicles- secretes sugary solution to aid in mobility of sperm • Prostate Gland- secretes alkaline solution to decrease acidity of the uterus • Cowper’s Gland (bulbo-urethral glands) - secretes lubricating fluid
2 TUBES • Urethra- brings urine or semen out of the body through the penis • Vas deferens- tube that carries sperm from the testes
Terms • Erection- when the penis becomes engorged with blood • Ejaculation- when the semen leaves the penis • Semen-mixture of sperm and other fluids • Sterility-unable to reproduce • Vasectomy- a surgical procedure in which the vas deferens in manipulated

Concerns about male body: • Nocturnal Emission (“wet dream”) Ø Ejaculation that occurs during sleep • Hernia Ø Weak spot in abdominal wall near scrotum • Sterility Ø Unable to reproduce Ø Due to malformed or nonexistent sperm
Cancers of the male • Testicular Cancer Ø 1% of all cancers in men Ø Most common in ages 15 -34 Ø 12% of all cancer deaths • Signs: Ø Slight enlargement in teste Ø Lump (small, hard) Ø Dull ache and heaviness
Cancers (cont. ) • Prostate Cancer Ø Most common cancer in men after lung cancer Ø Common in men 50 and older • Signs: Ø Difficult/frequent urination Ø Blood in urine Ø Lingering pain in back, hips, or pelvis
Cancer • Early detection is best way to prevent or treat cancer • Surgery may be necessary
