Diagram of the Male Reproductive System

Functions of the Structures of the Male Reproductive System Testis: They produce sperm and sex hormones Epididymis: Stores the sperm while the sperm matures Seminal Vesicle: Helps towards the seminal fluid Cowper’s Gland (Bulbourethral Gland): Helps towards the seminal fluid

Functions of the Structures of the Male Reproductive System Cont. Prostate Gland: Helps to produce seminal fluid Urethra: Ductus Conducts sperm out of body Vas Deferens: Conducts and stores sperm from the testes to the urethra Penis: Organ used for copulation

Diagram of Sperm

Functions of the Structures of Sperm Tail: Used for locomotion of the sperm Middle piece: Contains mitochondria to produce energy Head: Contains 23 chromosomes. Digests the protective barrier of an egg to penetrate the egg. Acrosome, a type of lysosome, is attached.

Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone Gonadotropin releasing hormone is produced by the hypothalamus. It is used in the anterior pituitary gland. It is used to cause the secretion of FSH and LH. The hypothalamus regulates gonadotropin releasing hormone.

Follicle Stimulating Hormone It is released by the pituitary gland. It is important for the development of men’s testes. It acts on Sertoli cells. It also stimulates sperm production. It is regulated by negative feedback of anterior pituitary.

Luteinizing Hormone Produced and released by the anterior pituitary gland. It stimulates the production of testosterone in Leydig cells. It is regulated by negative feedback. When large amounts of LH is produced, GNRH is reduced causing LH to reduce.

Testosterone It is produced in the testicles. It is used to develop the testis and secondary sexual characteristics. It is regulated by negative feedback. As it increases, it inhibits Gn. RH which in turn inhibits the amount of testosterone.

Secondary Sexual Characteristics Pubic hair Growth Body hair growth Enlargement of larynx Larger bodies in comparison to females Shoulder widening Increased muscle mass
