Introduction Defining Characteristics: ● The shortfin mako shark also known as the blue pointer or bonito shark is known for being the fastest shark on earth. ● This shark belongs to the order lamniformes, the Lamnidae family, genus Isurus, and species oxyrinchus. ● To start of with the anatomy of the shortfin mako, its body is cylindrical, fusiform, and hydrodynamic.

Shortfin mako sharks are considered to have sexual dimorphism because the females are larger than the males. Adult male mako’s weigh between 132 lbs- 298 lbs and can measure between 11 ft-13 ft unlike females who can weigh up to 331 lbs. Shortfin mako sharks have a powerful caudal fin semicircular with a highly developed lower lobe.

Two dorsal fins, second one being smaller than the first along with the two pectoral fins that are shorter than the length of the head. Distribution of the organism The mako inhabits all the temperature waters of the world, with larger concentration in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans and in the Red Sea and the Meditteranean Pacific- mainly found along the American coasts and from the territory of Primorye in Russia to New Zealand Australia Indo-Pacific- found in the East Africa to Hawaii

Introduction to Adaptation The three main adaptations that Shortfin mako sharks are known for is their speed, having long flat teeth, and having the ability to survive in different temperature waters. The speed of a Mako shark allows it to hunt their prey and escape their predators. Shortfin makos also have long flat teeth which help it grip and tear through its prey easily.

This shark inhabits all the temperature waters of the world, which allows it to have a variety of prey to choose from, but their known favorite food is blue fish which consist of 92% of their total diet, they are also known for preying on cephalopods like squids and octopus along with bony fish like mackerel, tuna, swordfish, dolphins, turtles, seabirds, and smaller sharks. When hunting the mako shark stays under their prey until it is ready to attack, in which it swims vertically toward the prey, Immobilizing it by biting

Why should we care about this organism Mako sharks are very unique organisms that are mainly known for their relentless speed. With that being said it is important to protect this species from harm or human danger Mako sharks aren’t naturally kniown fo having natural predators but there have been instances that they have been preyed on by larger sharks.

The main threat to Mako Sharks is HUMANS, are known for being important species for commercial fishing These sharks are valued for their high quality fins and meat (which is used for eating shark fin soup) and their liver oil is extracted as a source of vitamin A. Fisherman that use longline fishing gear to target other fish regularly capture shortfin mako sharks and keep them to sell commercially.
