Ø History In 1892, Arthur Turnure founded Vogue as a weekly newspaper in the United States, sponsored by Kristoffer Wright; the first issue was published on December 17 of that year, with a cover price of 10 cents ($2. 63 in 2015). Turnure's intention was to create a publication that celebrated the "ceremonial side of life"; one that "attracts the sage as well as debutante, men of affairs as well as the belle. " From its inception, the magazine targeted the new New York aristocracy, establishing social norms in a country that did not value class and ceremony as much as England or France. The magazine at this time was primarily concerned with fashion, with coverage of sports and social affairs included for its male readership. Ø Style and Influence The name Vogue means "style" in French thus it was no coincidence that it was described by book critic Caroline Weber in a December 2006 edition of The New York Timesas "the world's most influential fashion magazine“ and Anna Wintour, its current editor-in-chief, was described as one of the most powerful figures in fashion. Over time Vogue pursued a lot of initiatives that made it more visible and well-known it the techonological, economic, poltical, and social fields. For example, economically speaking Wintour «Fashion Night» initiative, lounched in 2009, had great success through the intention of kick starting the economy following the US Financial collapse of 2007– 2008. In addition, since 1971 Vogue magazine hosts each year the Met Ball, which is an annual event to celebrate the opening of the Metropolitan Museum's fashion exhibit. Further information

Ø Criticism Over time Vogue drew criticism for more than one reason. During 2007, for example, the anti -smoking group accused it for carrying tobacco advertisements in the magazine. The group claimed sending the magazine more than 8, 000 protest emails or faxes regarding the ads and, in response, a spokesperson for Condé Nast released an official statement: "Vogue does carry tobacco advertising. Beyond that we have no further comment. “ An other criticism was about Vogue futuring male figures in one of its cover in 2008. During this year a cover photo was presented by photographer Annie Leibovitz of supermodel Gisele Bündchen and the basketball superstar Le. Bron James. This was the third time that Vogue featured a male on the cover of the American issue and the first in which the man was black. Some observers criticized the cover as a prejudicial depiction of James because his pose was reminiscent of a poster for the film King Kong.
