Symbol � A symbol is a word or object that stands for another word or object. The object or word can be seen with the eye or not visible. For example a dove stands for Peace. The dove can be seen and peace cannot.
Point of View � � You will review this by reading a chapter and answering questions. 4 main styles of narration: first person, omniscient, third person (limited) and objective
Atmosphere and Mood � MOOD: The atmosphere that pervades a literary work with the intention of evoking a certain emotion or feeling from the audience. In drama, mood may be created by sets and music as well as words; in poetry and prose, mood may be created by a combination of such elements as SETTING, VOICE, TONE and THEME. The moods evoked by the more popular short stories of Edgar Allen Poe, for example, tend to be gloomy, horrific, and desperate.
Irony � � � IRONY There are several types of irony in literature. Three main types are verbal irony, dramatic irony, and situational irony. Verbal Irony: This is the contrast between what is said and what is meant. In other words, sarcasm. Ex. I just LOVE to write essays Situational Irony: This is the most common in literature. It is the contrast between what happens and what was expected (or what would seem appropriate). Because it emerges from the events and circumstances of a story it is often more subtle and effective than verbal or dramatic irony.
Dramatic Irony � Dramatic Irony: This is the contrast between what the character thinks to be true and what we (the reader) know to be true. Sometimes as we read we are placed in the position of knowing more than what one character knows. Because we know something the character does not, we read to discover how the character will react when he or she learns the truth of the situation.
