Roanoke Colony – Trip #1 n n On April 27, 1584, a fleet of ships piloted by Captain Philip Amadas and Captain Arthur Barlowe sailed from England Their mission was not to start a new colony, but rather to find land that was more suitable for lasting settlements
Trip #1 n n n On July 13, they landed on an island off of the coast of present day North Carolina. They made contact with the natives They liked the area and sailed back to England to report what they found.
Roanoke Colony –Trip #2 n n In 1584 a fort and settlement with more than 100 men is made The fort is abandoned after 1 year due to poor weather, lack of supplies, and poor relations with the natives
Trip #3 n n n 1587, Raleigh sends another group of settlers 91 men, 17 women, and 9 children Lead by John White On August 18, 1587, the first English person is born in the New World n Virginia Dare (John White’s grandaughter) Needed supplies, White returns to England
White Returns… n n n 3 years later, due to a war with Spain, White returns to Roanoke Colony was deserted of all inhabitants The only clue was the word “Croatoan” and “Cro” carved on a tree
