Sustainability Criteria: Packaging Step 1. Ranking Products. Rank the seven items according to which you believe is more or less sustainable. Use the table in the handout to organize your thoughts and take notes. Use the Google Form link to fill in your final responses, either during class for homework. The link is in your homework assignment.

Sustainability Criteria: Packaging Step 2. Group Discussion, Identifying Sustainability Criteria. Compare your responses to those of your peers. Find similarities and differences. Are some responses different ways of saying the same thing? Think about how your reasons could be restated in more general terms to describe sustainability criteria. For example, if you selected a package as being more sustainable because it was made out of cardboard because you were assuming that cardboard is easy to recycle, then you would describe that sustainability criteria in terms of efficient recycling. Or, if you choose glass over plastic because it is made from sand rather than petroleum then you would describe that criteria in terms of reliance on fossil fuels.

Sustainability Criteria: Packaging Step 3. Once you have completed your group discussion, return to your individual ranking sheet. Consider whethere is anything you would change from your first set of rankings, now that you have discussed this with the group. Are there criteria you did not initially consider. Are there decisions your group made that you did not agree with? How did your rankings change as a result of the discussion? Enter notes about any changes on your handout, and use these notes to complete the lower portion of the Google Form.

Waste Management News • A 1/17 report on Vermont’s solid waste shows that more than half of what residents throw away could be recycled, composted or diverted from landfills. About 28 percent of Vermonters’ solid waste is organic matter, much of which could be turned into compost, according to state officials. • Pilot Program "Recycle Often. Recycle Right. " Helps Reduce Recycling Contamination in Elgin, Illinois. In different phases, targeted various neighborhoods beginning in January 2016. Residents get a red hanger on their refuse carts when they throw in nonrecyclables and green hangers when they stop doing that or do it less. The hangers are in English and Spanish. • More news here: http: //images. link. penton 3. com/Web/Penton. Equipment.
