The Liturgical Year Learning Objective: Students will learn why the Church has a Liturgical Year and why it is important.
A time for every purpose under heaven… The notion of time helps us celebrate life by marking and recalling the important dates and events in our lives. Ex: Birthdays, anniversaries , graduations, etc.
A time for every purpose under heaven… Time has an important place in our spiritual life: It helps us reconnect with God. There are two types of time: Chronos and Kairos
A time for every purpose under heaven… Chronos is the time we measure. Ex: hours, days, weeks, minutes Kairos is the Lord’s time. It is God’s special time. Kairos reveals his will for our lives.
The Liturgical Year The Liturgical year or Church calendar helps us celebrate the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. This is called the paschal mystery.
The Liturgical Year The Paschal mystery is celebrated through specific seasons. There are five specific seasons in the Church’s calendar: Advent, Christmas, Ordinary Time, Lent and Easter.
The Liturgical Year The Liturgical year is a cycle of seasons repeating itself at the end of each cycle. The Church year or cycle begins with Advent and ends with ordinary time.
The Liturgical Year The Church calendar or Church year begins with the Holy season of Advent. The Church year begins in late November or Early December. Four weeks prior to December 25.
The Liturgical Year The word liturgical comes from the Greek word liturgy. Liturgy meant “Public Works” In Church language liturgy is the public worship given to God. i. e. Mass and sacraments.
The Liturgical Year Through the Liturgical Calendar Christians express their faith in Christ their savior. Each season of the Liturgical year celebrates an important aspect of Christ’s life.
The Liturgical Year Each season in the Liturgical calendar has a particular theme. Each season has a particular liturgical color. Each season concentrates on different parts of the Bible. Each season has different religious practices, and symbols.

What is white? This color is used to symbolize light, purity, and joy. It is associated with the Easter season. 1, 4
What is The Ascension of the Lord? This is the day that Jesus’ physical body rose into Heaven. 2, 1
What is the Solemnity of Mary? This Holy Day of Obligation celebrates the one who said, “Let it be done to me according to Thy word. ” 2, 2
What is Good Friday? Catholics observe this moveable feast in honor of Jesus’ death. 2, 3
What is violet (purple)? This is the color worn by the priests during the Advent season. 2, 4
What is Ash Wednesday? This celebration reminds us of our human mortality as we reflect on our spiritual lives. 3, 1
What is The Assumption? This is the occasion of Mary’s body and soul rising into Heavenly glory. 3, 2
What is Pentecost? This moveable feast is always held 50 days after Easter and it is associated with the Holy Spirit. 3, 3

What is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception? This feast celebrates the conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the womb of St. Anne. 4, 2
What is Ash Wednesday? This moveable feast marks the beginning of a period of prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving, and self-denial. 4, 3
What is green? Priests will wear vestments of this color during ordinary time. 4, 4
