The Time Had Come for a Saviour, Christ the Lord! It was time for the earth to receive her King. “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. ” Luke 2: 811 5/19/2021 6

The Birth of Jesus The visit of the wise men (Matt 2: 1 -12)

The Birth of Jesus The visit of the wise men (Matt 2: 1 -12) 1 ¶ Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. 3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. 5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, 6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, art not the least among the princes of Judah: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. 7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. 5/19/2021 13

The Birth of Jesus The visit of the wise men (Matt 2: 1 -12)

The Birth of Jesus The visit of the wise men (Matt 2: 1 -12) - continued 9 ¶ When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. 5/19/2021 14

The Birth of Jesus Flight into Egypt (Matt 2: 13 -15) 13 ¶ And

The Birth of Jesus Flight into Egypt (Matt 2: 13 -15) 13 ¶ And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. 14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: 15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. 5/19/2021 15

The Birth of Jesus Herod slaughters the children of Bethlehem (Matt 2: 16 -18)

The Birth of Jesus Herod slaughters the children of Bethlehem (Matt 2: 16 -18) 16 ¶ Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, 18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. 5/19/2021 16

The Birth of Jesus Joseph returns to Nazareth (Matt 2: 19 -23) 19 ¶

The Birth of Jesus Joseph returns to Nazareth (Matt 2: 19 -23) 19 ¶ But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child’s life. 21 And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee: 23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene. 5/19/2021 17

“He shall be called a Nazarene. ” 1) Why? Because of where he lived.

“He shall be called a Nazarene. ” 1) Why? Because of where he lived. Note that the significance of this prophecy was geographical. Nazareth -> Nazarene 23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene. 2) Note that many prophets’ words were, at least from our knowledge, unwritten. Prophet(s) Enoch Agabus Prophets at Antioch (Acts 13: 1) Philip’s four daughters (Acts 21: 9) Those referenced in I Cor 12: 28 who would have been throughout the churches in the first century Jesus Prophecy “He shall be called a Nazarene. ” (Matt 2: 23) “Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints…” (Jude 1415) Reference made to a great dearth (Acts 11: 28) ? ? ? Where Written? ? Everything Jesus spoke was “inspired. ” Also, passages like Matt 4: 33 Every word he ever spoke written down? ? Exact words written? ? 3) Regardless of the full explanation of verse 23, Matthew wrote by inspiration that Jesus’ life in the city of Nazareth fulfilled the prophets words that he would be called a Nazarene. 5/19/2021 18

The Birth of Jesus Why worship this baby? Who is he? (John 1: 1 -18) 1 ¶ In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 ¶ And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, ) full of grace and truth. 5/19/2021 19

The Birth of Jesus Why worship this baby? Who is he? (John 1: 1 -18) continued 15 ¶ John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. 16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. 18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. 5/19/2021 20

Key Points n n Jesus, the son of God came into this world as

Key Points n n Jesus, the son of God came into this world as a man. But Jesus is our creator and our God. Be careful (II Tim 2: 15) not to read into the text what is not there (e. g. 3 wise men) -> because -> Faith comes from the word of God, not the wisdom of man (Rom 10: 17, I Cor 2: 5). If we can teach anything we want, we’re not working with God’s definition of faith. Believe the miracles, don’t explain them away. The virgin birth, the intervention of angels, the Star, prophecy fulfilled. Believe what is written – that’s faith (Rom 10: 17).
