The Life of Christ (32) Jesus Calms the Storm Doctrine of Faith Rest Mark 4: 35– 41 (NASB 95) 35 On that day, when evening came, He said to them, “Let us go over to the other side. ” 36 Leaving the crowd, they took Him along with them in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him. 37 And there arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up. 38 Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing? ” 39 And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still. ” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. 40 And He said to them, “Why are you afraid? The Life of Christ (32) Jesus Calms the Storm Doctrine of Faith Rest q The phrase on that day in Mark 4: 35 refers to the day that Jesus had been teaching the crowd in parables. q Jesus instructs the disciples to board boats because He wishes to go to the other side of the sea of Galilee. q Fierce, sudden storms are common on Lake Galilee because of the surrounding terrain. q Because of their refusal to believe certain things Jesus taught these men were still very immature spiritually. q They should have been able to faith-rest the fact that God had a plan for Jesus’ life and that those who were with him were not in any real danger. The Life of Christ (32) Jesus Calms the Storm Doctrine of Faith Rest v However, the storm was a strong one and the waves had become so big that they were coming over the bow and water was beginning to fill up the boat. v Jesus was tired because of the long day teaching and then explaining the parables to the disciples, so he laid down in the back of the boat and went to sleep; in His humanity, Jesus experienced all the same limitations that we face, like fatigue. v The disciples are scared and wake Jesus from His sleep and accuse Him of not caring whether they live or die. v They reacted in fear, which is opposite of faith-rest; when believers give in to fear, they do not trust God. v Had they stopped to think about the doctrine they knew, they could have figured out that they were not going to die since they were with Jesus. The Life of Christ (32) Jesus Calms the Storm Doctrine of Faith Rest Ø Jesus rebukes the storm and then criticizes the disciples for their lack of faith. Ø While the Bible makes it plain that God controls the weather and there a lot of verses that teach that He has control over things like lightning, thunder, earthquakes, volcanos, tornados, hurricanes, floods and drought (God determines how much or little rain falls in a place). Isa. 29: 6, 30: 30; Jer. 10: 13, 23: 19, 51: 16 Ø What is clear from this incident is that the God/Man (Jesus Christ) could also control the weather and was able to keep the disciples safe, even when they did not think He cared. Ø It was easier for the Lord to stop the storm, to calm the wind and waves, than to provide inner peace for the disciples (depends on their volition). Ø They had the option to exercise faith or to panic and they chose to give into fear, which caused them to question Jesus’ love and care for them. The Life of Christ (32) 8

Isaiah 30: 30 (NASB 95) 30 And the LORD will cause His voice of authority to be heard, And the descending of His arm to be seen in fierce anger, And in the flame of a consuming fire In cloudburst, downpour and hailstones. Jeremiah 10: 13 (NASB 95) 13 When He utters His voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, And He causes the clouds to ascend from the end of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain, And brings out the wind from His storehouses. Jeremiah 23: 19 (NASB 95) 19“Behold, the storm of the LORD has gone forth in wrath, Even a whirling tempest; It will swirl down on the head of the wicked. Jeremiah 51: 16 (NASB 95) 16 When He utters His voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, And He causes the clouds to ascend from the end of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain And brings forth the wind from His storehouses. The Life of Christ (32) Jesus Calms the Storm Doctrine of Faith Rest ü Mark 4: 41 makes it clear that, even after seeing the miracles and hearing the doctrinal teachings that day that the disciples still do not understand who Jesus is; they do not recognize that He is God in the flesh and they will not figure this out until after the resurrection. Mark 4: 41 (NASB 95) became very much afraid and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him? ” 41 They ü In spite of their belief that He is the Messiah, they do not understand that He is fully human and fully God; the only person that seemed to figure all this out was John the Baptist. Jn. 1: 26 -30 ü Jesus was six months younger than His cousin John, so when John the Baptist says that He existed before me (Jn. 1: 30), he can only be referring to God the Son, who lived in Heaven prior to taking on a human body. ü That is also the reason John the Baptist said that Jesus had a higher rank that I; he was not referring to the fact that He was the Messiah but to the fact that He was God. But as He went, the crowds were pressing against Him. 43 And a woman who had a hemorrhage for twelve years, and could not be healed by anyone, 44 came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His cloak, and immediately her hemorrhage stopped. 45 And Jesus said, “Who is the one who touched Me? ” And while they were all denying it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing in on You. ” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone did touch Me, for I was aware that power had gone out of Me. ” 47 When the woman saw that she had not escaped notice, she came trembling and fell down before Him, and declared in the presence of all the people the reason why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace. ” The Life of Christ (33) 12

The Life of Christ (33) Healing a Woman Who Touched Jesus’ Garment The Raising of Jarius’ Daughter Scripture Luke 8: 40 -56, Mark 5: 21 -43 Luke 8: 49– 56 (NASB 95) 49 While He was still speaking, someone came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, “Your daughter has died; do not trouble the Teacher anymore. ” 50 But when Jesus heard this, He answered him, “Do not be afraid any longer; only believe, and she will be made well. ” 51 When He came to the house, He did not allow anyone to enter with Him, except Peter and John and James, and the girl’s father and mother. 52 Now they were all weeping and lamenting for her; but He said, “Stop weeping, for she has not died, but is asleep. ” 53 And they began laughing at Him, knowing that she had died. 54 He, however, took her by the hand called, saying, “Child, arise!” 55 And her spirit returned, and she got up immediately; and He gave orders for something to be given her to eat. 56 Her parents were amazed; but He instructed them to tell no one what had happened. The Life of Christ (33) Healing a Woman Who Touched Jesus’ Garment The Raising of Jarius’ Daughter Scripture Luke 8: 40 -56, Mark 5: 21 -43 q When Jesus returned to Galilee after His brief visit to Decapolis (a league of 10 cities, mostly on the east side of the Sea of Galilee), a man named Jarius, whose daughter was dying, greets him. q While on His way to Jarius’ house He is approached by a woman who has been bleeding from the womb for 12 years. q This illness not only effected her health, but also made her continuously ceremonially unclean, meaning she could not attend the synagogue and had to avoid contact with other people. q Having heard of others who had been healed by contact with Jesus she thinks that just by touching His cloak she will be healed. q She seems to have what might be called a superstitious faith and feels that it is His garment that will heal her. The Life of Christ (33) Healing a Woman Who Touched Jesus’ Garment The Raising of Jarius’ Daughter Scripture Luke 8: 40 -56, Mark 5: 21 -43 q Given the nature of her illness and its stigma (shame or disgrace), she also wished to avoid the humiliation of having to explain her illness to Him so she can be healed. q She works her way through the crowd, touches Jesus’ cloak and is immediately healed. q Jesus senses the healing power flowing from Him and asks who in the crowd had touched Him. q Peter’s comment reflects what the other disciples thought as well and expressed impatience with Jesus for asking what he considered to be a stupid question. Luke 8: 45 b q Jesus brushes his comment off and seeks out the person who touched Him and caused the healing power to flow from Him. The Life of Christ (33) 16

The Life of Christ (33) Healing a Woman Who Touched Jesus’ Garment The Raising of Jarius’ Daughter Scripture Luke 8: 40 -56, Mark 5: 21 -43 q The woman is frightened since she knew that she was not supposed to come into contact with other people, but recognized that there is no way she can continue to blend into the crowd; she then comes forward and falls down before Jesus. q Jesus’ words to her are designed to reassure her and to emphasize that it was her faith that healed her and not some magic power that came from His clothing. q Jesus honored her faith, even though it was mingled with superstition. q If faith is present and the object is correct, then the associated blessing follows. q Jesus’ deity healed her, even though His humanity was not aware of her presence and did not know who had touched Him or what illness was healed. q His humanity experienced the same limitations as ours, so He did not know if it was even a man or a woman who had been healed. The Life of Christ (33) Healing a Woman Who Touched Jesus’ Garment The Raising of Jarius’ Daughter Scripture Luke 8: 40 -56, Mark 5: 21 -43 v Jarius was an official of the synagogue at Capernaum and was certainly a well-known in the area. v He falls at Jesus’ feet, not in worship but as a humble way of begging One who is in a position to grant him a favor. v His daughter is dying (in fact, she was almost dead and he knew it) and He begs Jesus to come and heal her. v He believes that Jesus’ touch is required, so he does not have as much faith as the Centurion. v However, Jesus did not refuse him but responded to his faith; Jesus would later teach that even a small amount of faith could accomplish great things. v When Jesus reaches the house, there are many people there mourning the fact that the child had died; at that time, professional mourners were common. The Life of Christ (33) Healing a Woman Who Touched Jesus’ Garment The Raising of Jarius’ Daughter Scripture Luke 8: 40 -56, Mark 5: 21 -43 v These were people that came to participate in the funeral, who may not have even known the dead person, but who engaged in loud crying, screaming, and tearing their clothing (an outward expression of grief). v Matthew 9: 23 says the crowd was in “noisy disorder”. v Jesus tells them to stop carrying on (this was essentially a loud mob with no direction or real purpose) for the child was only asleep. v While some teach that the girl had died, she was still alive but had slipped into a very deep coma and appeared to everyone there to actually be dead. v Since everyone thinks she is dead, the people assembled begin to make fun of Jesus; the crowd mocks Jesus and believes that He is stupid. The Life of Christ (33) Healing a Woman Who Touched Jesus’ Garment The Raising of Jarius’ Daughter Scripture Luke 8: 40 -56, Mark 5: 21 -43 v Jesus takes only a few people into the child’s room with Him (her father and mother, along with Peter, James, and John), where he takes her hand commands her to arise. v Jesus then instructs them to give her something to eat and to remain silent about what has happened. v By itself, this miracle did not prove that Jesus was anything more than a prophet. a) In 1 Kings 17: 17 -24 Elijah raises a woman’s son. b) In 2 Kings 4: 17 -37 Elisha raises a child. c) In Acts 9: 36 -42 Peter raises a woman from the dead. v However, this series of incidents, which included controlling the weather (Lk. 8: 25), casting out demons (Lk. 8: 27 -39), healing the woman from bleeding, and raising a girl who was nearly dead was designed to show that He (Jesus) was much more than a prophet. I beg You, do not torment me. ” 29 For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized him many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, and yet he would break his bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert. 30 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name? ” And he said, “Legion”; for many demons had entered him. 31 They were imploring Him not to command them to go away into the abyss. 32 Now there was a herd of many swine feeding there on the mountain; and the demons implored Him to permit them to enter the swine. And He gave them permission. 33 And the demons came out of the man and entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. 34 When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they ran away and reported it in the city and out in the country. 35 The people went out to see what had happened; and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting down at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they became frightened. 36 Those who had seen it reported to them how the man who was demon-possessed had been made well. 37 And all the people of the country of the Gerasenes and the surrounding district asked Him to leave them, for they were gripped with great fear; and He got into a boat and returned. 38 But the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging Him that he might accompany Him; but He sent him away, saying, 39“Return to your house and describe what great things God has done for you. ” So he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.
