• Jan. 21. 1831 -Born in Franklin County, TN • Parents: Granville & Nancy Lipscomb • Brother William born in 1829. • 1835 -Granville moved family to Illinois to free their slaves. • 1836 -Death of Nancy Lipscomb • 1837 -Granville marries Jane Breeden • 1846 -David & William enter Franklin College—under Tolbert Fanning • 1846 -David is baptized by Tolbert Fanning. • 1849 -David Graduates from Franklin College
• 1849 -51 Manages large plantation in Georgia—unclear about future • 1851 -returns to Tennessee • 1852 -Jesse B Ferguson’s views on spiritualism. Lipscomb’s faith tested– Fanning helps him stay true to the faith • 1853– His father, Granville dies. – leave wife and children– A. B. Lipscomb 8 years old
Events Prior To 1865 • 1856 -preaches first sermon • Continues to preach in Central Tennessee • 1855 -Tolbert Fanning and William Lipscomb start the “Gospel Advocate. ” • 1861 -Outbreak of Civil War-Urged Southern Christians not to participate • 1861 -Gospel Advocate ceased to be published during the war.
Events Prior To 1865 -Part 2 • 1862 -Marries Margaret Zelner– their only child (Zelner) dies in infancy. • 1862 -63 -Teaches school near Lawrenceburg, TN • 1864 -moved to farm in Nashville area. • 1865 -Civil War ends with Lee’s surrender to Grant at Appomattox

Lipscomb’s response to the Cholera Epidemic--1873
Lipscomb’s response to the Cholera Epidemic--1873 David Lipscomb, though he lived ten miles outside the city limits, remained in Nashville to assist the sick. His buggy carried the women of the Roman Catholic “Sisters of Mercy” as well as the Dominican order to their destinations and he himself cared for the sick and dying, including African-Americans.
