WHAT IS THE LIBERAL ARTS CORE? A liberal arts education requires students to take courses in the: Humanities v Social sciences v Mathematical sciences v Natural sciences v Jesuit ideology of “Cura Personalis” Development of the whole person v Well-rounded individuals v Loyola students take 17 core courses in the liberal arts, plus the diversity requirement

EFFECTIVE WRITING WR 100 (3 CR. ) Students should take this course during their first year at Loyola Preparation for university-level writing in all Loyola courses Students develop a full writing process – planning, drafting, revising, and editing – as they learn how to compose the critical research essay
HISTORY Students take two history courses: one lower-level (100 level) and one upper-level (300 level) Students must complete a lower-level history before they can take an upper-level history All 100 levels focus on the Making of the Modern World: Europe United States South Asia East Asia Africa Middle East Latin America
LITERATURE Students take two literature courses: EN 101: Understanding Literature – An introduction to short fiction, poetry, and drama v Major Writers (a 200 -level EN course) v Students must complete EN 101 before they can take a Major Writers courses: Major Writers: American Literature Major Writers: English Literature Major Writers: Shakespeare Major Writers: Classical Mythology Major Writers: The Classical Epics Major Writers: Greek Drama
FOREIGN LANGUAGE Students must reach the Intermediate II level (104) of a foreign language to fulfill the core This may take students anywhere from one to four semesters depending upon the placement test score No placing out of foreign language unless: v v AP Exam – Need a score of 4 or higher to fulfill the core requirement Attended high school where courses were entirely taught in a foreign language Foreign languages offered at Loyola: Spanish Greek Italian German French Chinese Latin Arabic
SOCIAL SCIENCE Students take two social science courses Social science courses include 100 -level courses in psychology, sociology, political science, and economics In some majors, students take specific social science courses to fulfill the core: Business Admin. , Accounting & Econ. – EC 102 & EC 103 v Education – ED 205 & one additional social science core v Forensic Studies – PY 101 & SC 101 v Global Studies – EC 102 & EC 103 v Political Science – PS 101 & PS 102 v Psychology – PY 101 & one 200 -level PY v Sociology – SC 101 & SC 102 v
FINE ARTS Students take one fine arts course selected from: AH 110: Survey of Art – Paleolithic to Gothic v AH 111: Survey of Art – Renaissance to Modern v DR 250: Intro to Theatre History v DR 251: Experience of Theatre v DR 252: Intro to Theatrical Production v MU 201: Music Fundamentals v MU 203: The Art of Listening v MU 204: Western Musical Traditions v PT 270: Digital Photography v SA 224: Two-Dimensional Design v Be careful! Only the specific courses listed above fulfill the core requirement in fine arts
MATHEMATICS &STATISTICS Students take one course in mathematics or statistics to fulfill the core requirement: MA 117, MA 118, MA 115, MA 151, MA 251, ST 110, ST 210, or ST 265 Students are placed into a math course based on their math placement test results or level of high school preparation (if a student has had calculus in high school) MA 109: Precalculus does NOT fulfill the core MA 005 is a 1 -credit course designed to prepare students for MA 109 In some majors, students take specific math courses to fulfill the core

PHILOSOPHY Students take two philosophy courses: one lower-level (PL 201) and one upper-level (200 level) Students must complete PL 201 before they can take the upper level philosophy PL 201 provides a foundation for the study of philosophy with regard to its historical beginnings and central themes The 200 -level philosophy courses allow students to focus on a particular philosophical perspective (i. e. love, art, education, humanity and divinity, culture, etc. )
THEOLOGY Students take two theology courses: one lower-level (TH 201) and one upper-level (200 level) Students must complete TH 201 before they can take the upper level theology TH 201 provides an introduction to Jewish and Christian scripture The 200 -level theology courses allow students to focus on a particular area (i. e. scripture, history, or culture)
ETHICS The ethics core requirement is fulfilled by an ethics course in either philosophy (PL 301 -319) or theology (TH 301 -319) In order to take an ethics course in philosophy, students must have completed PL 201 and their 200 -level philosophy core requirements In order to take an ethics course in theology, students must have completed TH 201
DIVERSITY Students take one designated diversity core, major or elective course to fulfill this requirement Diversity courses focus on: Global awareness v Justice awareness v Domestic diversity awareness v Diversity courses are marked with a “D” in Web. Advisor Students who plan well should be able to find a diversity component within a core or major course The diversity requirement must be completed at Loyola
