THE LEGEND OF BIALYSTOK
According to the legend Bialystok came into being in 1320. That time the Great Prince of Lithuania Gedymin was hunting in the Bialowieska forest for deer. At night when the prince was tired he tried to relax near the small river. The water in the river was very clean. Gedymin was excited and he said: ” Clean white slope. We could build manor house or village”. Soon by the river occured manor house and later the village called Bialy Stok
IMPORTANT DATES: v about 1320 Bialstok came into being v 1437 -1450 The first owner of Bialystok – Jakub Raczka Tabutowicz who got this area from Polish king Kazimierz Jagiellonczyk v 1659 The Polish hetman called Stefan Czarniecki got destroyed Bialystok as a reward for the achievements in war. He gave the rights to Bialystok for his daughter who maried Jan Klemens Branicki v 1691 the son of Branickich Mikolaj Branicki got Bialystok town rights thanks to king Jan III Sobieski agreement v 1834 Bialystok was named Machester of the North v 1919 The first president of Bialystok – Józef Karol Puchalski. The town was given the name ”Great Bialystok”
v 1939 Bialystok was bombarded by German army. The beginning of the 2 nd World War v 1939 -1941 Bialyostokers exiled to Siberia and deep into Russia v 1944 The Red Army came to Bialystok and fihted to the enemy. The German Army withdrawed, but the Russian army came and destroyed the town v 1945 The end of the 2 nd World War v. After 1945 Bialystok was reconstructed by Bialystokers/ A lot of people came back to Bialystok and lived there/ The culture and art started to develop/ The new buildings were built by inhabitansts of Bialystok
