What did Franz notice that was unusual about the school that Franz noticed that the school was extremely silent and quiet like a Sunday morning. The classmates had occupied the benches which were usually lay vacant M. Hamel, the French teacher was pacing up and down with his terrible iron ruler under his arm; and was wearing the best of his attire, a green coat, frilled shirt and a black silk cap, all embroidered which he used to wear on special occasion of the school.

The order from Berlin had brought about a sea-change in the attitude of the people of Alsace towards their language and country People had gathered in the classroom, they were filled with gloom, girth and repentance There was an atmosphere of dismay at school The elders of the village like the old Hauser, the former Mayor, former post master had occupied the last benches which usually remain vacant Seemed all had come to pay tribute to Mr. M. Hamel, for his forty years of devoted service
How did Franz’s feelings about Mr. Hamel and school change? M. Hamel’s announcement that it was the last day to teach French came as a thunderclap to Franz. He repented for not learning his French lessons and wasting his time, seeking bird’s egg, sliding on the saar, watching the Prussian soldiers drill The books and bags which were a nuisance now became his friends and possessions He and the villagers started understanding what M. Hamel taught.
