The Knee Joint There are Four bones that come together at the knee joint. The Shin Bone (Tibia), the Thigh Bone (Femur), the Kneecap (Patella) Each is important part of the knee joint. 12/18/2021 11
The Knee Joint A fourth bone, the Fibula, is located just next to the shin bone (tibia) and knee joint, and can play an important role in some knee functions. 12/18/2021 12
The Knee Joint The tibia, Femur, and Patella, all is covered with a smooth layer of cartilage (see below) where they contact each other at the knee joint. There is also a small bone called a fabella, that is often located behind the knee joint 12/18/2021 13
The Knee Joint Cartilages of the Knee There are two types of cartilage of the knee joint. Articular Cartilage is the smooth lining that covers the articular surfaces of the bones. When the smooth articular cartilage is worn away, knee arthritis is the result. 12/18/2021 14
The Knee Joint Cartilage is a resilient structure that resists damage, but when injured it has a difficult time healing. 12/18/2021 15
The Knee Joint The other type of cartilage in the knee joint is called the meniscus. When people talk about 'Cartilage Tears, ' they are usually referring to a Meniscus Tear. The menisci are: Shock Absorbers Fit Modulators or Adapters There are two of them: Medial & Lateral 12/18/2021 16
The Knee Joint Ligaments of the Knee Ligaments are: Structures that connect two bones together There are Five Major Ligaments: They are the Cruciate (2), the Collateral (2) & the Patellar (1) Ligament. 12/18/2021 17
The Knee Joint “The Cruciate Ligaments” are two in the center of the joint, crossing each other: The Anterior Cruciate & The Posterior Cruciate Ligaments 12/18/2021 18
The Knee Joint The collateral ligaments are two, one on each side of the knee joint; the Medial Collateral & the Lateral Collateral ligaments. Patellar ligament Ligament injuries typically result in complaints of instability of the knee joint. 12/18/2021 19
The Knee Joint Muscles & Tendons Muscles generally are Flexors & Extensors of the knee. The Quadriceps Muscles are Extensors The Hamstrings Muscles are Flexors. 12/18/2021 20
The Knee Joint The patellar ligament (tendon) on the front of the knee is part of the quadriceps mechanism. 12/18/2021 21
