THE KINGSLEY PLANTATION
BEGINNING OF THE PLANTATION The Kingsley plantation otherwise known as the Zephaniah Kingsley Plantation was constructed in 1793. It was first owned by a former revolutionary war veteran nicknamed lightning Mc. Queen. It was built during the Spanish reign over Florida. Was constructed in Ft George Florida near Jacksonville. The actual building the owner live in is the oldest plantation house in Florida.
HISTORY OF THE PLANTATION Like I said before the plantation was first owned my Mc. Queen. Mc. Queen did not like the Spanish rule in Florida so he fled and sold it. He sold it to a guy named John Mc. Intosh. Mc. Intosh was a supporter of the US rebellion against Spanish rule over Florida.
CONTINUED Eventually Mc. Intosh's efforts were worn out and he too fled and went back to his home in Georgia. In 1814 Zephaniah Kingsley leased it from Mc. Intosh. This was the beginning of the many years Kingsley spent at the plantation.
ZEPHANIAH KINGSLEY Kingsley was born in England later settled in Ft George. He took over the plantation in 1814. Kingsley married one of his former slaves. Interracial marriage was not looked down upon in Spanish culture but it was looked down upon in the US.
CONTINUED Just seven years later in eighteen twenty one the state of Florida was taken away from Spain and put into the hands of the US. This was not good for Kingsley because he had married someone from another race. Kingsley was forced to move his family to haiti while he stayed behind.
CONTINUED AGAIN He stayed behind at the plantation hoping that he would reunite with his family one day. Before he could, he died in 1843 in New York. His wife then obtained the plantation. This didn’t last long because Ft George eventually became a recreational destination instead of a place to run a plantation.
THE PLANTATION The plantation was originally 1, 000 acres. The plantation grew and harvested crops such as cotton sugar cane corn and citrus. The building where Kingsley stayed in is the oldest cited plantation in the state of Florida.
MODERN DAY KINGSLEY Most of the plantation is now lying in ruins but there are still some parts of the plantation that are still standing. The plantation officially acquired by the national park service in 1991. This is a picture of some of the Kingsley ruins.
CONTINUED The plantation is now a tourist destination. It is also a place to hold weddings and banquets. The number one business they have there is their tour of the plantation. Below is a picture of modern day Kingsley.
