WHO IS JIM? § Jim is a caricature of a clumsy, dim-witted black slave § The origin of the name dates back before the civil war § The name "Jim" was created by Thomas Dartmouth "Daddy" Rice after seeing an elderly black man sing "Jump Jim crow". § Later he used that Jim crow persona and performed jokes and songs in a stereotypical slave dialect. § The name “Jim Crow” comes from a character in an old song and was the name of a popular dance in the 1820’s.
