PTC Team COURSE STRUCTURE
Course Structure & Assessment All SQA courses have units of work At the end of every unit in National 3, 4 there are unit assessments. N 5, H, AH will also have assessments used diagnostically Importance of Ensuring Pupils are at the correct Levels Pupils will only be certificated for what they are presented for and pass
National 3 courses • National 3 courses usually have 3 units with a unit test at the end of each unit. • There is no external exam so there is no grade allocated, instead it is either pass or fail. • An overall course pass is awarded on successfully passing all 3 units tests. • Individual units are a formal qualification and would be itemised on a pupil’s exam certificate.
National 4 courses • National 4 courses usually have 3 units with a unit test at the end of each unit. • They also have an additional assessment that is called Added Value and is assessed differently, usually with an assignment or project that would involve using the knowledge gained throughout the course. • There is no external exam so there is no grade allocated, instead it is either pass or fail. • An overall course pass is awarded on successfully passing all units tests and Added Value. • Individual units are a formal qualification and would be itemised on a pupil’s
National 5, H, AH courses • National 5, Higher and AH courses usually have 3 units of study with diagnostic assessments throughout. • Most also have an internal element that contributes to the final grade. Usually a project, assignment or folio of work. • There is an external exam so there is a grade allocated. Grades that are considered a pass are A, B, C and D. • A pupil that sits the exam but does not pass will receive a No Award.

POST RESULTS SERVICE • Exceptional circumstances such as medical issues, bereavement at time of an exam must be reported to school immediately • After results we can only ask for a remark or clerical check if we there is a substational difference between the final grade and our estimate (based on assessment evidence). RISK AS GRADES CAN GO DOWN AS WELL AS UP
