Second cycle • Upper secondary school (State) • Three-year vocational education and training (Regions) Licei 6 licei: classical studies, sciences, foreign languages, arts, music and dance, human sciences Technical Institutes 2 sectors: economic (2 branches), technological (9 branches) Vocational institutes 2 sectors: services (5 branches), industry and handicraft
Primary Education Weekly timetable (from 2009/2010) - 24 hours (only one teacher) - 27 and 30 hours (more teachers per class not at the same time) - 40 hours (fulltimetable) 396 hours of English language for the five years: first grade: 1 hour second grade: 2 hours third to fifth grade: 3 hours Lower secondary education Weekly timetable - 30 hours (corresponding to 990 hours/year) - 36 hours/40 hours 3 hours of English language 2 hours of a second EU language 5 hours of English language

Curriculum upper secondary education (2010) Linguistic competences (Common European Framework of References for Languages): level B 2 Licei (foreing language and culture) • Understanding oral and written texts • Production of oral and written texts • To interact in the foreign language Technical/vocational institutes (English/second foreign language): B 1/A 1 • Short conversations and written texts • To use the language for communication and operative purposes • To draw up written texts according to their scope CLIL in the 5 th grade of all licei and of technical institutes B 2
Pupil assessment (first cycle) Recurrent/final assessment Marks from 0 to 10 for subjects and behaviour Final exam = average of marks (4 written tests + oral test on all subjects) + Invalsi national test Admission to the subsequent grade/First-cyle leaving state exam Minimum mark in each subject and beahaviour = 6 Mark lower than 6 in behaviour = grade retention
