The ISOLDE consolidation project Mats Lindroos
The ISOLDE facility Mats Lindroos
Objectives for the consolidation project • To bring the level of radiation safety to a level compatible with European legislation • To consolidate the facility so that the required number of shifts per year are assured. Mats Lindroos
Project organization • Project leader: Mats Lindroos • Budget and time frames established by project leader for all activities • 13 sub-projects each lead by a sub-project leader • Sub-project leaders work independently within given frames and reports to project leader at monthly project meeting Mats Lindroos
Sub-projects Radiation-safety improvements • 2. 1 Building 179 and 838 as class A radioactive laboratory – Project leaders: Erich Kugler and Richard Catherall • 2. 2 Building 170 as class C lab with special area for work with open radioactive sources (and modifications to buildings 507, 115 and 601) – Project leaders: Erich Kugler and Uwe Georg • 2. 3 Renovation of target manipulation robot – Project leader: Richard Catherall Mats Lindroos
Sub-project Consolidation (1) • 3. 1 New front-ends for the ISOLDE facility – Project leader front-end 4: Stefano Marzari – Project leaders new generation: (Jan Borburgh and) Stefano Marzari • Guarantee running of the facility • Ease and cost of maintenance (lower personal dose) Mats Lindroos
Sub-project Consolidation (2) • 3. 2 Improvements of target manufacturing facilities – Project leader: Jacques Lettry • Guarantee target production • Increase beam quality (REX) Mats Lindroos
Sub-project Consolidation (3) • 3. 3 High resolution separator – Project leader: Tim Giles • High resolution mode – For the high resolution mode we need to: • A better theoretical understanding of the full system • Add control for higher order correction elements • New instrumentation • Beam cooler? Mats Lindroos
Sub-project Consolidation (4) • 3. 4 Improvements of LASER ion source – Project leader: New 5 th EIC • Enable routine operation and lowering operation costs Mats Lindroos
RILIS elements Mats Lindroos
Sub-projects Consolidation (5) • 3. 5 Improvements of secondary beam transport system – Project leader: Uwe Georg • Reduce setting up-time for experiments (stable beam) • 3. 6 Consolidation of ISOLDE control system – Project leader: Frank Locci and Giuseppe Mornacchi • Integration into PS control structure (DB, piquet, spare parts…) Mats Lindroos
Sub-projects Consolidation (6) • 3. 9 ISOLDE Power supplies – Project leader: Jean-Pierre Royer • Integrate maintenance in the PS power group’s structures • 3. 10 ISOLDE instrumentation – Project leader: Uli Raich and Gerrit Jan Focker • Integrate maintenance in PS beam diagnostics group’s structure Mats Lindroos
Sub-projects Consolidation (7) • The 2 last projects were not originally part of the consolidation – Equipment operational but NOT maintainable – Total lack of spares – An additional budget request for 2002 -3 will be sent to the director of accelerators ASAP. Mats Lindroos
Requested budget Mats Lindroos
Budget All costs in k. CHF Mats Lindroos
Time plan Mats Lindroos
Manpower • 15 human-years in total needed (5 per year) – Focus on consolidation and safety for existing staff rather then development and research – Request for: • CERN visitors programmes • ISAC-ISOLDE collaboration? – Advancement is likely to be manpower limited Mats Lindroos
