Geography The region, historically, was middle ground for the two haves of the trading world between the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean.

The Founding of Islam: 610 The region was mainly on the outskirts of the Roman Empire (later Byzantine) Islam was founded by Muhammad, a merchant from Mecca.
Divine Messages Muhammad was said to have received divine messages. These were the same that were given to Moses (Jews) and Jesus(Christians). Muslims Believed that Jews and Christians had corrupted these messages so they were being sent again. When he died, his messages were recorded in the Qur’an.
A religion for the people Emphasized a singular god. Not a holy trinity. Sympathy for the poor and the powerless. 5 basic demands: -recite the creed: “…one god and Muhammad is His messenger. ” -pray facing mecca 5 times a day. -fast during Ramadan -give alms -make one pilgrimage to Mecca
