Tuesday 21 st April 2020 Lesson 1 LO: To compose a free verse poem where alternate lines of describing sights and sounds are chosen.

◦ Listen to the Youtube video from p 22 until ‘He drove to the next farm. ’ ◦ Ask the children to close their eyes and visualise the scene by the stream when Hogarth saw the Iron Man for the first time. Set the scene for them and ask them to imagine they are Hogarth and think about what they can see, hear and how they feel.

Collect initial ideas in two columns –one with single words describing the feelings of Hogarth, the other with expanded phrases for the sights and sounds. Build the lists of vocabulary, extending the language being used where appropriate, for example by exploring expanded phrases and fronted adverbials. The Return of the Iron Man Down by the bubbling, splashing stream, Sat a boy as lonesome as could be. 'Hush, hush, ' the sea whispered, Aa above him loomed a shadow tall and square. Clanking, crashing footseps climbed, Higher and higher the dark, looming shadow rose. I would like you to create/compose a free verse poem with alternate lines about sound and sight. Refer back to the table that you created yesterday. Today we will be focusing on what Hogarth could see and how it made him feel. Title What can Hogarth see? How did it make him feel? What could Hogarth see? How did it make him feel? Using your table, create your own free verse poem. Remember to alternate you lines as you can see to the left. Please create at least three stanzas. Remember to take a picture of your work.

Thursday 23 rd April 2020 Lesson 3 LO: To explore a character's thoughts, feelings and reactions.

Listen to the Youtube video from p 22 until ‘He drove to the next farm. ’ Explore and discuss the following: How do Hogarth’s family react to his news? Ask children to voice their character’s thoughts at that point in the story. Spend some time focusing on Hogarth and discussing his reactions to what he has seen.

You may wish to use the attached sheet to help organise your ideas. The sheet includes the following: thought bubbles (thoughts), speech bubbles (what the character would say), arrows (what the character will do next) and hearts (the character's feelings). Encourage your child to choose one character and pretend to be them, responding in role. Note for parents: Model this as necessary and make notes of interesting and thoughtful ideas.
