What about Berlin? § Berlin was stuck behind this ‘curtain’ § Even though it was split between the Allies § USSR blockaded all roads leading to Berlin hoping to make West Berlin fall into communism
The Berlin Airlift § The West decided they needed to provide for West Berlin still § They did this by airlifting necessary supplies to West Berlin § During the Berlin Airlift over 8, 000 tons of supplies would arrive in West Berlin everyday
§ With growing concern about Soviet behavior, The West looked to form something to protect themselves § This lead to N. A. T. O. (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) § This was a treaty between Western Countries, that said that if one country was attacked then the others would defend them § The founding countries were; Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and the United States N. A. T. O.
The Warsaw Pact § The Soviets reacted by creating their own alliance system later on § They created the Warsaw Pact § This was a defense alliance that allowed the Soviet to tighten its control over the Eastern Countries § The countries included were; USSR, Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, the German Democratic Republic (East Germany), Hungary, Poland Romania
