Sample Context From the founding of Jamestown in 1607, the thirteen colonies developed independently of Britain and each other. An era of salutary neglect existed as Britain allowed the colonies to exert control over themselves. While Southern & Chesapeake colonies focused on farming, the New England colonies developed as towns and focused on other economic pursuits.
