The Internet Lesson 2

Starter (10 -15 mins) As you log on – tell the person next to you / the teacher what the definition of the internet is Load the network simulator and construct a network

Objectives • Specification 2. 1. 6 j “Candidates should be able to describe the hardware needed to connect to the Internet including modems, routers etc. ” • Grade D - Recall the terms router and modem • Grade C/B - Explain how routers and modems work to connect to the internet • Grade A/A* - Investigate independently a wide range of networking equipment

Last lesson • We learned that the internet is a world wide network of computers

How we connect • In order to enjoy the services of the internet we need to connect to it • So what hardware do we need to do this?

Modem • Stands for modulator / demodulator • Turns data into sound and back so that it can be transferred across a telephone line

Router • A piece of hardware that decides where data will go. • Essentially it connect two networks together • You probably have a wireless router in your house – this makes a home network. • There are routers at crucial points in the internet called gateways that link it all together

Task • Continue with your movie / animation • You need to include: • Grade D - A suitable picture of a modem and router • Grade B/C - An explanation of what a modem and router does • Grade A/A* - Some well researched information about other networking equipment (e. g. switch, hub, ISP, ADSL, ISDN)

Plenary • Answer the following questions on Edmodo 1. Sunil wants to connect to the internet. Name one piece of hardware he would need (other than a computer!). (1 mark) 2. Explain the purpose of a modem. (2 marks) 3. Explain the purpose of a router (2 marks) 4. “The internet is a world wide collection of computer networks. ” Research and explain the equipment necessary to make this happen.
