Brief History: • Together we will watch the Short Introduction to The Internet. - Vocabulary Look Fors: ARPANET, Email (@symbol), TCP, IP, World Wide Web, Browser & examples, and Dial-up.

USE • At first the internet was military. There was the ARPANET (sharing scientific information) and the MILNET (designed by the US Department of Defense – MAP 1989)

TCP/IP Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. 1980’S & 90 s and became the ‘language of the internet’. “The Internet protocol suite provides endto-end data communication specifying how data should be packetized, addressed, transmitted, routed, and received. ” (Wikipedia)

Basically, the Internet grew from scientific use and military use because of fundamental business concepts supply & demand. Supply & Demand Supply (how much of something a business provides) Demand (how much of something we want) • The Internet grew because people wanted to communicate and business got onboard as companies like Bell and Rogers saw how much money could be made and grew networks by building infrastructure.

Surfing The Internet • Web Browsers: A program that will interpret hypertext commands (HTTP – Ex: https: //www. google. ca/) of code written in HTML or web language. • You can see the variety of browsers you CAN use, but most people use Google Chrome. Hyperlinks: lead uses to another page on the World Wide Web – Highlight your text, and right click ‘hyperlink’, copy and paste your web address (URL).

URLs Domain Name: divided into 2 parts the cbc = second level domain name; . com = first level domain name. Every website has one (. ca, . org, . edu, . gov Protocol: defines the protocol used to communicate with the server – often http/https Host or Server: The host computer where the documents are stored for viewing – could be a cloud. Path: Optional, gives specific instructions to locate the resource you are seeking on the server, names or folder names.

Boundaryless Business • The Internet lets you create a business without boundaries. You just type in a URL and go! Before, businesses could only sell locally, now and especially because of the pandemic, businesses have been forced to pivot to online stores to sell their products and services worldwide.
